Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

I am walking through the empty, dimly lit hallway of _______ High, as I have done a million times before. Passing endless room after room filled with rows of desks, where students meet to grasp all the knowledge they can. I press my hand up against the cold, blue metal lockers that are hugged tightly against the cream painted brick walls. The smell of damp and musty air, filling my nose with each inhale. I really don’t have any business being here today.…

Walking through the doors of high school was an adrenaline rush. Sitting in my first class with individuals of which I didn’t want to talk to, they were just school ‘friends’. The year progressed on, and homework started coming in flocks at a time. I never knew how to prepare myself for high school, but it wasn’t as awful as people that prepared me said it was. As the year came to a wrap I was ready and eager for the next.…

As I am waiting on the side steps of the stage, I patiently stood as they read off our names alphabetically. My hand is temperate, as I am clutching onto the chilled metal stair railing. I could hear the surrounding people in the room clapping and cheering, as it echoed throughout the building as each person was walking across the stage to receive their own diploma. I could feel the butterflies in the pit of my stomach, as I had been waiting for this day for as long as I could remember. The day I was achieving something significant in my family.…

Although I’ve experienced so many transitions since late August, the most surprising of them has definitely been my propensity to establish friendships. I was surprised by this due to the fact that, as a high school student, I was always left out of activities because I was different from others since I worked extremely hard on my studies. I pursued my education in a small, public high school nestled in the suburbs, and education wasn’t a top priority among most of my peers. As an inevitable result, no one understood me, and I felt excluded from the rest of my class. When I came here, I expected my social life to be similar to that of my high school experience.…

High school in the United States was a good experience for me in terms of education and how well I did in my classes compared with the bad grades I used to get in my home country, Peru. However, my experience as a high school student in Peru was more fun and memorable since I used to fool around a lot with teachers and classmates and never paid attention in classes. As a result, I would always get kicked out of class by teachers for distracting other students. So I did not have good grades. I have changed a lot since I came here and become more mature.…

I always thought I had limits. It all started when my sister and I used to draw human figures when we were both in elementary school. She drew pretty one while I somehow managed to turn mine into Squidward from SpongeBob SquarePants. When I asked her how she drew them so perfectly, she merely shrugged and said that she became good when she entered third grade. From then, I waited for the third grade to come.…
