Personal Narrative: My Interview With Justin Paluch

For my UConn Alumni Feature, I had the responsibility of interviewing a young man by the name of Justin Paluch, an assistant basketball coach for Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. I originally chose Justin due to his current profession and after a 40-minute phone call that consisted of exchanging information and receiving advice, I am perfectly satisfied with the decision that I made. I thought it would be best to conduct my interview with starting from the beginning of his career up until where he is in his life today. The biggest thing that we had in common was the obvious: the fact that we both have attended the University of Connecticut. We talked about why he chose UConn and whether or not he felt that the Sport Management program did him justice. One thing that I got from this part of the discussion was how our program covers a wide range of aspects in the sport industry. For example, sport marketing, sport communication, and event management are all things that Justin stated that he has used over the course of his career. Hearing this made me look at things in a completely different light. UConn is a tremendously large school where we are fortunate enough to have plenty of full-time employees working in various areas. The best way to describe Andrew Middleton playing basketball is to compare him to a lion on the hunt. Although a lion isn’t the smallest animal, Andrew is a six foot four freshman, a lion is extremely stealthy and can sneak quietly up on it’s pray, and in a matter of seconds, the hunt is over. Middleton is not a man of many words, but he lets his actions speak loudly on the basketball court. Andrew is a freshman at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. In the first inters-quad scrimmage at Thomas the one play that sticks out in my mind was when Thomas Senior guard and MMBCWA first team all-state player of the year, nonchalantly took a shot only to get it shoved back down his throat by the quite Middleton who acted like it was no big deal, because to him, it probably wasn’t.…

Having him visit campus and speak to the students who are pursuing a career in sports was a wonderful opportunity. Prior to his speaking session, I was able to eat dinner with him with a few fellow students who are also involved with NSMA. Speaking with him one-on-one while being able to pick his brain regarding his career in the sports industry was an invaluable experience. Also, simply listening to his many stories as he reminisced about his career experiences was a once in a lifetime opportunity.…

The "True Bruin" philosophy resonated with me both professionally and personally as I researched the institution and academic and student services (AS2). I have only gotten this far with integrity, ambition, service, and immense support. I am passionate about helping students who have challenges that may affect their ability to be independently successful academically; transitioning new student-athletes to college, and developing part time support staff. In my experience, the student-athlete population that I have worked with has invaluable skills and talents beyond their athletics ability. As a student, I’ve learned there are two secrets to success; having a passion for what you are studying, and also surrounding yourself with knowledgeable people. These are words I take full advantage of when it comes to anything I do in life. Whether I’m learning a new skill, or studying for a class, making sure you are passionate about what you’re doing, and learning from someone who knows more than you is key to growth. While studying Sport Management at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB), I confirmed my passion for the Sport Management degree, while also having a rare opportunity to further compete in the sport I love, for that I am grateful. However, after I was unable to compete in football anymore, I found myself searching for more.…

I arranged to have my interview of Tyler occur on February 15th, 2016 in Corner Brook Newfoundland. The interview took place in my Chalet on Grenfell campus. We were positioned around my bed in as comfortable position as possible which consisted of me sitting on the bed while Tyler knelt on the floor. This area of the Chalet tends to be the quietest spot therefore it made for a better recording and it is a place we both tend to feel quite relaxed in. The interview itself was about contrasting the various Newfoundland foodways that Tyler has experienced, in which he mainly focused on his family and home versus my home and my family’s ways.…
