I had the pleasure in conducting a person to person interview with a good friend and colleague named Jess Vercruz. For several years I have known this individual. He works with me at Officer Candidates School as our athletic trainer. I have always known that he was a highly educated individual who has worked with our command for over two decades. What makes him such a unique person is that he truly cares about his job and most importantly, the impact it has on others. He is one of the most humble individuals I have met; team ministry defines his character. Team ministry must be basar — a Hebrew term ordinarily translated as "flesh." But another frequent meaning is: the significant others in our lives, "our own flesh (Duffy, 1974). He is honest, forthright, compassionate and dependable. He doesn’t allow pride to get in his way and if he doesn’t know the answer to something he will find the answer quickly. I am willing to put myself through anything. Temporary pain or discomfort means nothing to me as long as I can see that the experiences will take me to a new level (Maxwell, 2006). Something that I see daily from Jess, as a athletic trainer is that he constantly places himself in uncomfortable positions so he can learn the importance of adaptability and breaking barriers.
The second idea I learned was to “avoid being selfish” and remain service minded, just like Jess he focused on helping others. Not once have I seen him place his own personal needs over a colleague or candidate needs. We are reminded that “doing nothing for others is the undoing of one’s self” (Maxwell, 2006). Working around Jess has helped me to reconfirm the importance of team work, and
