Personal Narrative: My Interview With Employee

Great Essays
I decided to conduct my interview on a fellow coworker named Haley Smith. Haley and I worked together at a local restaurant called, Steak n’ shake in Orange Park, Florida. I decided she would make a great candidate for the tattoo interview, because she is always very open and friendly. I have known Haley for 4 months, and have developed a semi amicable friendship with her. Haley is a twenty-four year old college student, whom is working on attaining an associate’s degree by the end of this year. The highest level of education she acquired was a high school diploma and a year of community college. Her future ambitions include traveling the world and getting a master’s degree in nursing. Haley comes from a conservative family background. She …show more content…
She was very helpful in offering her services. At first, I lamented about how strenuous school work was getting as midterms drew near. This was my attempt to gain empathy and bond with her through mutual experiences. As a college student, Haley knew the importance of having a reliable resource. Since we both worked as servers, I went out of my way to be more visible to her. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, I would try to strike up a friendly conversation with her. Once we established a time and a place we were both free, I quickly got her number and added her on social media. I knew that communication and constant contact was critical in the event that she would blackout at the last minute. I needed to have several ways in which I could contact her, in case I needed to plead with to maintain her promise of an interview. With her number and a scheduled date at hand, I was more than confident that she would come through with her …show more content…
She was aware that I wanted to know more about her tattoo and that the intent was not to demonize her of her aesthetic choices. I wanted to come across as supportive and as nonthreatening as possible. The best way I knew how to conduct an interview was based on Russell Bernard’s article. I would use both the tell me more probe and the uh huh probing methods (Bernard 2011:161)1 I knew that using both types of probes would be effective. I assumed that that most young adults love to talk about themselves and this approach would produce the most favorable results. My tactic was to start out with a question and continuously feign interest. This tactic would encourage Haley to tell me more about herself without having to ask too many questions. Haley informed me that she comes from a very conservative family. After her parents divorced, her life took a dramatic turn. Her mother became very lenient in her upbringing and allowed her to do anything she wanted. She found that she was constantly scrutinized by her relatives and she and her mother were deemed the black sheep of the family. Haley was often discouraged from modifying her body in any shape or form. Her family believed that altering her physical appearance would hurt her social status. This was due to their Christian beliefs. Haley stated that, “to my family getting a tattoo was the ultimate sign of anarchy and that it would prevent me from acquiring a reputable profession.''

How often does a college student learn that a fellow peer is 30 years old, married and has a stable job? I certainly didn’t, but the interview I was given the opportunity to deliver showed just that. Going into this interview with Katherine, I didn’t know a thing about her. I approached the interview with a series of generic questions in an attempt to get to know her. I asked about Katherine’s hobbies, family, friends, current job, even where she would like to travel.…
