Personal Narrative: My Interview With Christine Curtis

Decent Essays
I had the chance to interview Christine Curtis. She is a communications teacher here at WSU. Communications fits into my overall learning at WSU because everyone needs to learn communication skills to either get or keep a future job. Throughout the interview I learned both academic tips from her, and more about her personal life.

Going into the interview I was very nervous. I’ve been close with teachers in high school, but never have had to interview one in any way. This assignment was actually quite stressful for me because I’m not a very skilled interviewer and get nervous easily. Christy was very nice and easy to talk to which helped relieve my stress as our interview continued. Looking back, it was really great getting to know one of my college professors and learn what type of person she is. Christy loves to play tennis, and has a dog. She doesn't have any children but considers her dog her child. I thought this was really cool because it shows her love for animals and helped me relate to her on a personal level. Both Christy and I, like all types of music but her favorite artist is Miranda Lambert.

Christy had told our class the basic places during syllabus week, places like going to office hours, academic media services, and the library. However, during this assignment she also told me she would recommend going to the writing center. She also told me when she was in college she was a “nerd”. Meaning, she liked to read a lot, and was always studying. This relates to what she sees as an ideal student. Christy thinks the ideal student is one who participates in class, ask questions, and does the assignments on

I think Washburn values diversity because having diversity at a university presents all kinds of thinking and reasoning strategies from different types of students. Also, there are more ways to come up with results and solutions when there is a diverse setting containing students from different backgrounds. In my opinion, I think the most important part of the WU diversity statement is the first sentence that says, “The mission of our diversity initiative is to honor the Washburn University commitment to respect, embrace, enhance and celebrate diversity at all levels of the University and surrounding communities through faculty, staff, student and administrative efforts and community partnerships.” I think this sentence is important because it is stating what the mission of diversity is at Washburn. I support the WU diversity statement because the last sentence states, “Washburn defines diversity broadly to encompass gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation and identity, disability, age, religion and national origin” and this greatly reflects my views on diversity.…

The interview with Mr. Randy Taylor, a Ph. D student in the Social, Cognitive, and Neuroscience area as well as Intro to Psychology professor, was interesting because he is a relatively newer professor and somewhat closer to his students as compared to other professors. His interview involved questions about his interest in psychology, as well as the path he intends to take as a professor, as well as the struggles that he will face. Equally importantly, I asked him regarding the struggles with working in a research environment, which is an environment that I hope to some day work in. When/Why did you become interested in studying Psychology?…
