I could relate to her because I was also an English Language Learner even though I came to America at a younger age that she did. It is difficult for an ELL student to feel comfortable in a setting where everything is so foreign and you do not understand. That is kind of how I felt when I was doing the interview but I learned to be positive and get out of my comfort zone. There are many barriers that an ELL student can have that the teacher must pay attention to so that the student can be helped. First of all, they are new to the country, school, and people so having them feel comfortable and speak to them as much as possible is important. I believe that I learned English from hearing it every day at school. Having students repeat words and try to have conversations without correcting them immediately if they make a mistake is imperative. When someone says “No” that is not how you say it or make fun of you because you said something the wrong way, it can shut a student down and not try to speak the new language because they are embarrassed by being laughed at or scolded. I am glad I had this experience because I would have never done it on my own and would not have learned so much about Raja’s life and culture that I found so amazing. It is astonishing how you can relate to someone so much without even knowing and that is why one should not judge other people because we are all so similar in many aspects. In education teachers and staff should have knowledge of this aspect and try to help those students that need help because they feel out of place. It is imperative for students learning that we understand them and understand where they come
