Personal Narrative: My Interview With A Mormon

Improved Essays
For my service project I chose to conduct an interview with someone who practices a faith different from mine so I interviewed a Mormon. Some might consider Mormonism to be part of the Christian faith, but I would readily argue that it has differences that are substantial and irrefutable. I had always wondered about the beliefs of the people who spend their youth in ties knocking on doors and several movies made the differences seem pretty extreme. I began to wonder what it is that they really believe and how they can make it make sense in the world that we live in. A fellow soldier, Matt, is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He initially stood out by being one of the few to refuse energy drinks and alcohol. He is thirty years old and has six children with his wife – on purpose. Our discussion began with a pretty simple question: “Tell me about your God.” He told me that his god came from the god before him. That sounded pretty intriguing to me so I obviously asked him where that god came from. Again, “From the god before him. “ This cycle continued …show more content…
I do not believe in aliens. I believe that when God created the heavens and earth he made us special so there are not other planets with people on them. Matt said that he was brought up to believe that there is life on other planets and that it was also created by god, so those beings are like us. They have a human form and know about the gods and heaven in the same way that Matt and his fellow worshipers do. Discussing every day life I wondered why they do not drink soda, energy drinks, alcohol, caffeine, etc. He informed me about the Word of Wisdom. They are supposed to eat well and exercise and avoid the things that many indulge in like cigarettes, drugs, caffeine, and alcohol because they are not good for the body. I asked him if he ever “cheats” and he told me that his guilty pleasure is Mountain

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

Apologetic Analysis of Mormonism The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as Mormons, began as a six member church and has grown to over 15 million people and over 29,000 congregations worldwide ("LDS Statistics and Church Facts"). With the past presidential candidacy race, it seemed that Mormonism faced many critiques or questions from Americans as Mitt Romney took the hot seat and answered questions about his religion ("21 Questions Answered About Mormon Faith"). Throughout my life I have heard the same statements from outsiders of the LDS church.…

Many people don’t know what they want to be when they “grow up”, as for my mother she didn’t know what type of religion she wanted to be in when she “grew up”. However, she did know the basics that she believed in which was God, the Holy Spirit, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Bible that being said she considered herself Christian and raised me as a Non-Denominational Christian. That was until my senior year of High School when my mom decided she no longer wanted to be part of the Non-Denominational Christian faith and switched over to becoming part of the LDS faith known as the Mormons and flipped my life upside-down with their different views of norms and values. Growing up Non-Denominational Christian is fairly simple faith and to me…

I am a non-practicing religious, more spiritual, person. I decided for my service learning project to interview someone who is practicing from the same religious background that I came from. Even though I grew up taught religion by my Catholic mother, I was never truly practicing. Even with this I found many similarities to a practicing Christian. I chose to interview because I was curious about how my non-practicing views meshed with someone from the same religion who is much more read in it.…

Shortly after departing from the fur traders, I experienced a deep religious revival with God. Therefore, I thought this was a sign from God advising me to seek religious inspiration for my novel. Hearing of my dream, Gideon proposed that we travel back east to Illinois where the Mormons lived as a way to fathom how a newly founded Christian deviation has attracted so much gossip among the travelers we met along the western trails. After several months of dangerous snowy storms, we were finally able to set out east towards Nauvoo, Illinois to visit the famous Brigham Young. Accepting Gideon’s advice, I hoped to obtain another different religious perspective from my Protestant values to further progress my characters’ development.…
