When I started to ask questions Ms.Kea said looking surprised and laughing“ I'm surprised that you have asked such thought promoted questions since I really have to think to answer these questions.” One of the questions I asked Ms.Kea was “ What do you struggle with at your job?” and she responded with a disappointed face, that she has trouble helping troubled kids to get them to understand that there is a bigger world out there and they need to get to work. My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. Many of them do this and it contributes to the flow of the classroom and the engagement level of the entire groups. Students are expected to pay attention to the speaker during the mini-lesson by facing their way and not playing with any other items.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

“I’m really sorry, but you were short of passing by just 1 point”. These words resonated in my head as my mentor informed me about the disappointing results of my written exam for the bilingual instructor’s assistant position. After rehearsing the practice questions crafted by my mentor for an entire month, I felt inadequate and ashamed for wasting her time. This was my first attempt at applying for a job, and I failed before I even had the chance to get an interview. Moreover, my mentor was a veteran of the district office, and she provided all the tools necessary to pass.…
