Personal Narrative: My Internship With The Stony Brook Press

Improved Essays
For my internship, I worked with the Stony Brook Press. I did not have an exact role going in but I was willing to do photography and writing. It was only a one credit internship and luckily, I was able work most hours whenever I had time, especially when it came to writing and editing pictures. I mainly worked with Niravni Williams who was the managing editor, but is now the executive editor. Before I even started my internship officially, I had talked with one of their writers who wanted to have a photography session for an article. This would be my first assignment with the Press, and it was definitely the hardest. While I do have some experience working in a photography studio, it was intimidating trying to direct and photograph my own shoot. Furthermore, the shoot was basically in the dark. The only light source would be coming from a projector which was showing scenes from anime films. This already was extremely difficult to work with—every setting on my camera was the exact opposite of what would normally be used in a studio shoot. In the end, I was able to make it work and they used the photographs in the print issue and for the cover. …show more content…
This one was more fashion based and for an article about thrift shopping. They wanted it to be a studio shoot, but the Press does not actually have a studio. They had had a black sheet and a boxed light to use. The particular shoot was the longest photographing I did in one go. There were about 8 different people modeling and only me as the photographer. In the end, there were over 1,500 pictures to edit, which was left to me as well. Those that are critical of how photo manipulation is used we will be presented with a look at the negative responses that have been triggered by celebrities and viewers which has led to celebrities refusing to have their photos retouched and decided to “take a stand against rampant photo retouching, declaring the practice detrimental to your health which has brought attention to photo manipulation such in the case of Brad Pitt and Kate Winslet who asked photographer Chuck Close to capture them showing all imperfections, we are then left with questioning are they really make up free? In order to do this we must look at both sides of photo manipulation and the effects that it has on the viewer followed by echoing the idea that a photograph points to both the reality and a dream before finally deciding what we see as Art in photography and distinguishing what really exists and what existed enabling us to explore the relationship between photography and the truth. Becky Olstad is a photography instructor at The Art Institutes International Minnesota says “there is a general misconception that Photoshop inherently means manipulation” This is the reason why it is important to discuss the meaning of what photo manipulation actually can do other than promote a disconnected reality, it allows us to control such things like exposure, colour balance, contrast, lighting, all the things that have traditionally been controlled in a traditional…

The best and worst decision of my high school career took place before the first day of my freshman year. I signed up for photojournalism, the class that produces the yearbook. While it’s a fulfilling and captivating class that has become one of my passions, it’s also undeniably the most stressful and time-consuming class I have ever taken. I still remember the first time I completed a spread.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

An internship is normally a work task a student completes after a series of classes to gain a degree in a particular field they think they’ll love, whether they still love it after they’ve completed that journey is based upon a multitude of criteria. Luckily, I have found that I quite enjoy fashion and working in retail throughout this internship at Dress Barn. Occasionally students find that what they thought they were getting into, is actually completely different than what they expected. Especially when reading about a profession on paper versus seeing it up closer in real life. When I started college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study or achieve with my life.…

At this internship, I built upon what I learned at Hyde Square Task Force and developed more confidence and determination to succeed in a professional environment. Not only did I take Shakespeare, writing, public speaking, civil rights and art classes, but I also worked in an office, participated in community service events, and visited colleges, which all helped me explore and adapt to different ambiances of the work…
