Decent Essays
With this opportunity to experience the job of both a paraprofessional and a special education teacher, I have just reaffirmed my plan to become a special education teacher. The internship has helped me realize that the job as a special education teacher isn't always all fun and games but it is extremely rewarding. I watch as my mentors go about their day with a sense of love for their job, which is what I feel just getting to hangout with the students at the middle school. I feel so incredibly prepared for my future, I sometimes thing I don't even need to go to college. I love both the ups and downs of this profession, this is my dream job. This was an incredibly interesting week for my internship. The week consisted of my mentoring

When I finally had the opportunity to work and assist military veterans, I never expected that I was going to work directly with clients who were diagnosed with a substance and mental health disorder. For my first internship in Graduate School, I interned on Skid Row at the Volunteers of America Los Angeles (VOALA). This internship was very challenging and demanding for me, because I had no idea what to expect. I interned in a Harm Reduction program that assisted homeless veterans with transitioning from temporary housing to permanent housing.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. James and I met at my job throughout my time working there I have worked with many managers.…

At the beginning of the semester while at my field placement, I noticed several staff members who appeared burnt out. Since that time, I set a personal goal to aim to lift the spirits of the staff members within the agency. I decorated the bulletin boards around the office giving the staff positive messages to view throughout their day. I also secretly left positive quote cards on their desks in efforts to further build morale around the office. While visiting the offices of the staff members, I have noticed the cards displayed on filing cabinets and taped to desk.…

I went from an exceptional student to one who talks back. Since freshman year Mrs. R had been my favorite teacher, even though I did not have her until I was a junior. She was kind and always there if you needed to take a breather in her class, or simply do whatever you needed to on the computer, if it was your lunch. I've heard students complain about how they did not like her and how annoying she was. However, I couldn't understand why they felt that way about Mrs. R. I never saw her the way they did.…

Over the two semesters interning at Pathways, my communication skills enhanced. As far as oral, written, engagement, interviewing, and case noting, I have practiced them all at my field placement. Before I became an intern at Pathways, I was unaware of my poor writing skills, I was also not comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people, however, my field instructors assisted me right away. My field instructors would assign me writing assignments, and each time they would review them, they would find grammatical errors that needed to be fixed. The writing assignments continued until they determined I had developed in that area.…

During my internship experience, I learned a lot of things that I thought I knew but are misconstrued on. With that being said, I know everything must be done in decent order or this will cause chaos and lead to confusion. I also learned everything takes patience and is very time- consuming. I became frustrated, so many times and just wanted to give up, but I had to remind myself that hard times are going to come and everything is going to work out. Many times I sat on my bed crying because it seems like everything piled on me at one time.…

law firm internship. An agonizing few days passed as I waited for a reply, and I was ecstatic to learn that I had been chosen for the internship. No words could explain how excited I was but the smile that filled my face said it all. At this internship, I built upon what I learned at Hyde Square Task Force and developed more confidence and determination to succeed in a professional environment. Not only did I take Shakespeare, writing, public speaking, civil rights and art classes, but I also worked in an office, participated in community service events, and visited colleges, which all helped me explore and adapt to different ambiances of the work…

I started the BEST program through Butler in 2013 after a 10 year hiatus from college. During that hiatus, I worked as a paraeducator for the Derby and Haysville school districts. It was the special needs students that I interacted with that inspired me to gain a teaching degree. Although it was difficult to leave these children, I knew that I would need to quit working full time in order to be successful in my return to college. My goal is to eventually obtain a Masters in Special Education and an administration certification.…

My first experience working in a low income community was when I was a sophomore at Georgia State University. I was a member of a Post Readiness Educational Program (PREP). My role at PREP was to go to low income middle schools during the week and help seventh and eighth graders with homework and talk to them about how to prepare for high school and what they will need to do in order to succeed. When helping the students with their homework I realized how incredibly smart they were, yet they had so many outside influences that were a distraction. Some of these distractions included, but were not limited to, family problems, poverty, and issues with peers at school.…
