Personal Narrative: My Internship At Millers Children Hospital

Improved Essays
This semester I did my last internship at Millers Children Hospital in Long Beach. I have learned how to maintain myself professional, learn how to work with different type of people and overall learn how to communicate with patients and give them and their family the support they need. The patients at Millers Children hospital are children that have cancer and some are there for other reason. Being at Miller I learned how to maintain myself neutral, professional, and how to advocate for my patients, and compromise with some of my patients.
Miller has four playrooms that provide toys, art activities and one on one interaction with the patients. I have been to all four playrooms and each one is very unique. I have learned how to run the playroom

During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

I’ve been shown with this experience how important it is for me to keep working at my people skill, that my ability to efficiently communicate is the bases for success with a sales job like selling flooring or lighting fixtures. This internship has helped me grow as a person and gain confidence. My favorite part of my internship was when Cozette and I were working with a client on a new construction job. The client brought in a completed floor plan, and came to select finishes and cabinetry. As we were walking through the floor plan we discussed the layouts of the bathrooms and kitchen.…

My brother recently had surgery at the VA Hospital in Lexington, and once he thought he was himself again, he pushed to go home. The problem was that he had no one at home to care for him. The summer before my Junior year I dedicated my Friday’s to Dayton Children’s hospital. I was born with a cleft lip and my latest procedure occurred over Christmas break at the same hospital. Before the procedure I was overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. Looking down the hall while sitting frantically with an IV in my arm and “what if’s” going through my head I saw a yellow lab with an elderly volunteer women. The two entered my room and immediately I felt a sense of relief.…

The first week was defiantly a challenge for me because I felt like I was lost, both literally and mentally, for much of the week. Overall I think I learned a lot, but it was a little frustrating because most of what I learned had nothing to do with actually being a radiation therapist. I know it was only the first week, but I thought I would learn more. Coming into this week I thought I would be doing more with the therapists, but I spent most my week with the nurses and doctors. I learned a lot from them about what happens throughout the rest of the department, and I think what I learned really helped give me a good background on what patients all go through.…

My ideal internship experience would involve working in a role where I am surrounded by people who encourage each other in a supportive environment where everyone has a unique contribution to the team. I would love to work in an environmental health field or in epidemiology where I can work behind the scenes to improve public health, as well as working directly with the public. It would be ideal to be able to constantly challenge myself, and be involved in multiple roles. It would also include having the freedom to work independently, as well as collaborating with…
