Personal Narrative: My Internship At Miller's Children Hospital

Improved Essays
I am currently doing my internship at Millers Children Hospital. So far I have enjoyed doing my hours at Miller because each day there is always something new to do and a new opportunity to learn. What I love about Miller is that every day you get to meet different people and I get to work with different staff as well. When I go to Miller I make sure that I perform the best of my capabilities. My supervisor is very nice and I enjoy working with her, what I admire from her is that under no circumstances she never displays any feeling of anger or stress when some of the patients parents are rude. I like the fact that she maintains herself neutral and treats everyone equally. My supervisor is always there to answer questions that I have and if …show more content…
It was very sad to me seeing some of the younger children trying to fight for their life. I put myself in these parents’ shoes and I don’t think I would be able to handle seeing one of my children ill. The hardest part for me is being a mother myself and seeing the emotional struggle these parents have to go through. Seeing how these young children are vulnerable and just knowing they are sick but seeing them act like any other children and being a happy trooper it is awesome especially seeing them smile and have a good time. When I am at Miller I make sure that the kids that are at the playroom are getting the attention they need and making sure that I am advocating for their needs, by being a good listener, to giving them the one on one interaction and by getting them ready for new arts and craft activities. This internship has made me valorize what I have in life and be thankful for what I have. It is so true that this career will make you a better person. I know that each day I will learn and grow into the helping profession

By the time I received the email announcement that University of Michigan Health System diagnosed me with Acquired Dyscalculia, I felt like sinking into a bottomless glacial. Everything around me appeared as featureless hollow darkness. I heard with a chill on my back that the car accident occurred last summer was speculated to be cause. It was on way home back from Thailand, where I went to support the education at Vieng Neua Primary School as a volunteer. I was afraid, indeed, that the dyscalculia—a name that I had not heard before and a disease I was totally not familiar with—would jeopardize and ruin my study and life.…

On Wednesday, October 7, 2015 I eagerly went to my first Pediatric clinical site. I was nervous as always, but once I entered the Meyer site I realize I was more so in a delightful heaven. I always had a special place in my heart for children with special needs or any congenital anomalies. So to see the kids and how they interact with one another as well as how "normal" they were with their learning abilities. No children received medication during my clinical visit, although a few was said to receive medication by their parents in the morning or before bedtime.…

Scraping your knee on the sidewalk, getting hit hard with the basketball, falling off the monkey bars, these are just a few examples of ways you can get hurt at school. The worst case scenario is you would end up going to the school nurse as a result of an accident. Before first grade, suffering an injury was way out of the norm for me. The only time I got hurt in first grade, I bypassed the school nurse and went straight to the hospital. It was a scalding August afternoon, and I just finished another tiring day of first grade.…

Through the videos I was able to watch a baby develop the thought process that if they cry they will get attention. Many of the children came from large families who were only able to give them limited attention, despite the fact that they desperately needed large amounts of individualized attention. The care that staff gave these children helped level the playing field for some of them. Despite their differences, all patients, first are foremost, are united by the fact that they are people who just want to improve their heath. As someone who is passionate about connecting with and helping others, I am interested in more than just the medical problems that people might have; I am interested in the patients as people. These experiences made me realize how important understanding the whole patient is.…

While attending Florida State University for the past 3 years, I have managed to conquer a handful of classes. Throughout lectures, labs, and long nights studying, I have always contemplated whether or not this information is going to beneficial to me in the “Real World”. As daunting as the “Real World” seemed to be in the past, it no longer seems to be such a scary place due to the knowledge I have gained from my time in the classroom as well as the time I spent interning at Mad Men Marketing this summer. Yes, there are a lot of classes that are required as prerequisites that in no way, shape, or form correlated to the skills needed to understand and complete various tasks at my internship, but at the same time I firmly believe that having some background in a variety of subjects is crucial in understanding the world and becoming a well rounded intellectual. As my junior year of college came to a close this…
