Personal Narrative: My Internship At Gallatin Valley Food Bank

Improved Essays
The last week of my internship at the Gallatin Valley Food Bank was spent working on tasks that are completed on a day to day basis by volunteers and the type of work that made up the majority of my internship hours. During the morning on Monday I first watered the garden and then helped to restock the store shelves from the back stock and morning donations. In the Afternoon on Tuesday I helped to box up groceries for customers as they checked out and once again watered the garden. I am confident that I could drop in at any time of day and be able to help out in most situations. The will allow future volunteer work of really any type at the food bank to be feasible.

The Gallatin Valley Food Bank is open to customers five days a week from 1pm until 4pm. During this three hour time period, on average 60 customers pass through the food bank. The shopping area can only comfortably hold about ten customers at

Along with this the research I completed for the food encyclopedia has greatly expanded my knowledge of food preparation and preservation methods. As a result of this project, in the future, I intend to make more food items from scratch and buy less pre-made food items. My time at the food bank has made me realize the importance of putting money aside for a rainy day. Food is a necessity, but it is more than feasible for me to eat a healthy diet, while only spending a small portion of my paycheck on it. I have decided to do so by buying ingredients in bulk to make food items such as bread, cheese, vinegar, pickles, and butter from scratch to then prepare homemade meals at a much cheaper cost than purchasing a plastic wrapped pre-made meal. According to my calculations, I will be able to save a substantial amount of money if I can successfully make most of my meals entirely from

Introduction My last semester at Middle Georgia State University as an undergraduate student was filled with a wonderful opportunity to intern with the Bibb County Sheriff Department. My internship experienced was supervised under the leadership of Cindy Gresham, the executive assistant of the agency. Historically, social control in Bibb County was maintained by two separate entities, the Bibb County Sheriff Department and the former Macon Police Department. There were multiple attempts to consolidate the two agencies in efforts to decrease the amount of tax payer dollars allocated to public service and to increase the effectiveness and efficiently of their service performance.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Throughout this article, Erway opens the reader 's eye in many ways, especially to the terrors of unhealthy food that we are open to consume every day. In her second of nine points, Erway points out that “One-third of America’s garbage is comprised of packaging; bags boxes, and other things that come with the purchase that are not meant to be kept,” (Erway 2). This statistic alone was astonishing, showing that as Americans, if we collectively cooked, grew or raised our food at home, we could save the environment from nearly a third of the waste we contribute each year. Further along in her 9 reasons, she breaks the idea of self improvement up to show how much cooking at home can benefit life, from your own health, and choosing to what goes in your mouth, to tapping your personal creativity while cooking, even to the extent of dinner parties. Her 4th reason was that “Dinner parties are contagious” as she continues to explain how the idea of going out can almost be replicated, and the atmosphere is always more nice, having a home-like feel.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. In order to raise money for prom this year, I accompanied the class of 2019, for 5.5 hours, to a west point game and worked in concessions. I had a great experience working with my peers to achieve a goal that would benefit the senior class. Recently I have engaged in service with my church, for 4 hours, helping to move furniture while they were switching locations. From this experience I learned that sacrificing my time for a communal effort may seem minuscule, but ultimately helps increase efficiency. Also I volunteered at the annual Easter egg hunt at memorial park last weekend for 3.5 hours.…
