My interest in the honors college derives from the environment that I have grown up in since my sixth grade year. Like many of those applying to the honors college, I was separated from many of my peers into a group of children who showed an advancement in intellectual ability at an early age. This allowed us to work together with suitable partners to help each other learn and develop new ways of thinking. The honors college will serve much of the same purpose and allow me to maximize my learning experience while at Purdue. Although you have to be 36 years old to legally become the president of the United States, I feel as if I’ve experienced an aspect of presidency in my fourteenth year of living. Of course, it is obvious that being president of my middle school’s National Junior Honor Society is nowhere near being the president of the United States. But in fact, my experience depicts a quite harrowing and concerning aspect of presidency. In an interwoven city and school, creating close relationships was inevitable.…

National Honor Society has helped me develop their four pillars, scholarship, service, leadership, and character, into my daily life. To become a member, a specific GPA is required and maintained, which is more motivation to keep up academic achievement. Additionally, tutoring is a major part of our society, so having a good understanding of the subject you are tutoring in makes sure that you maintain the level of academic achievement the honor society calls for. I have always loved doing service in my community and being a member of the society has grown that passion for me in different ways, I became exposed to tutoring and community clean ups. It even inspired me to create an outreach through my ballet to a senior center.…

The Honors College at Auburn is designed to challenge the students that have showed academic excellence in their high school careers. The college should help students think more openly about the problems in today’s world, and lets face it, they are numerous. With the help of professors, the students in the Honors college should be able to pinpoint the source of a particular problem as well as the solution. I am not saying that the students will change the world with their way of thinking, but the students will be taught perspective. This type of thinking can only be mimicked in a challenging environment with people who are pushing each other to be better.…

I believe there is a more evident ambiance of respect in the Honors Program because, like the students, the professors are highly motivated. Additionally, the Honors students want to be in a more academically challenging environment and the professors want to teach these students who are hungry for knowledge. Furthermore, the smaller classroom settings are ideal for my learning process. With the smaller settings, there are less distractions and more individual attention which makes a difficult topic easier to comprehend. Also, I plan to take advantage of the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities since I have been accepted to the College of Engineering.…

After turning it in…

All my life, I’ve been aware of the people around me and considered what I could do to make their lives more fortunate. With this interest in mind, I joined the Anti-Bulling Club (ABC) at my school in the 6th grade, eventually becoming ABC president in the 10th grade. As president, my biggest priority was to make my school a place where students were welcomed to engage in discussion unafraid of what might be said; I tried accomplishing this goal by getting volunteers to hold the doors and greet peers to school each morning. Through creating this inviting atmosphere, students participated in more constructive conversation, leading to provoking questions that even teachers could not answer. When I transitioned to community college life in the…

I first attended Appalachian about 15 years ago, entering in the class of 2000. Due to personal and family events, I wasn't able to graduate, so I am getting my second chance now, at both a degree and and the valuable experiences that being involved with the community and networking with others can bring. The one thing I did learn from my previous collge experience, both at Appalachain and at the community college I currently attend, is how much value comes from the colege experience outside of class - connecting with others who have different life experiences, and learning and doing things together to improve ourselves and the community. Since I intend to major in Communications/Journalism, I am looking forward to getting involved with student…
