Personal Narrative: My Insubstantial GPA

Improved Essays
I am writing to request a complete course withdrawal for courses taking Spring 2016. During Spring 2016 I encountered challenges that hindered my ability to perform at my best academic ability; I believe that the marks I had received were a result of my circumstances. I wish wholeheartedly that the turn of events that occurred this past year were different, but that is not possible and I feel it is necessary to explain myself and the reasoning behind my Insubstantial GPA. I admit, I had a very difficult time last semester, and my grades suffered as a result. I believe this is a unique occurrence and will not repeat itself, I hope my performance during this semester while handling the issues I encountered during Spring 2016 does not leave …show more content…
I had begun to send out messages to my instructors informing them of my situation (e-mails attached) in hopes that I would be able to recover some of my grades, however at this point in the semester they were unable to offer much help (I can easily understand why they would be unable/unwilling to help me, a lot of students come nearing the end of the semester requesting to have their grade boosted for various reasons). Nearing the end of march my immediate uncle was admitted to the hospital after falling into a coma; he’d been in poor health for a while, he passed April 1, 2016. The death of my uncle hurt me deeply, I had been extremely close to him. Even though I had been taking the antidepressants for 3 weeks now I had not yet completely adjusted to the medication. My emotional states fluctuated frequently, I had gained the ability to take notice of my anxiety episodes at this point and manage them somewhat. I had closed myself off again from my friends to cope, they took notice but I …show more content…
I know I could’ve succeeded that semester if these events didn’t occur, I know now with a clear mind and after treatment I definitely would’ve succeeded. I truly believe this is a unique occurrence and is extremely unlikely to reoccur. I have taken the time to reflect on my discussions’ with my instructors’, students first advisor, and on all that had gone wrong during Spring 2016. The impact these grades will have on my academic career is significant, due to the obstacles I had encountered during the semester I believe they should be excluded. Using what I have learned I have taken measures to ensure that I succeed in the Fall of 2016; registering for tutors ahead of time, etc. I have planned regular appointments with my physician to track my progression/state while taken the medication. In order to create accountability on my part I have contacted all of my professors for Fall of 2016 ahead of time, informing them of my situation and asking for tips/advice to prepare for their course (see attached E-mails). By preparing and using on campus resources (SIP, TASP, etc.) I plan to succeed in the Fall of 2016 at UNCG and throughout the entirety of my college

As the stadium lights slowly began to blind me, the smile I was wearing started to fade as I felt an overwhelming, nauseating sensation flow over my entire body; I thought that flags only slipped through hands on battlefields, not on a Friday night during a high school half time show. Failure is a one-way mirror. When standing in front of the mirror, the failure simply stares back in the form of a reflection. My first performance for the high school color guard amounted to the show flag slipping through my clutches and slamming onto the freshly cut, football field grass. The searing embarrassment that followed felt like the end of the world.…

My grades this past year were and are not indicative of who I am as a student, or as a person in general. My junior year of high school, I decided to do PSEO, thinking it was an easy way to get credits for both high school and college. I did not realize the struggle I was going to have just trying to be accountable for myself during my senior year. My daily schedule consisted of work, soccer, managing the high school boy’s hockey team, volunteer work, spending time with my high school friends and taking college courses. I took the most challenging classes through Anoka-Ramsey Community College, thinking that like high school these would be the best for me.…

The past semester at buffalo state college has been a stressful one. The transition of going from high school to college was very different for me. I was very used to someone being on top of me and making sure that I was always getting my work done. So now being in a college world where you are completely dependent on yourself, I see now that you must be far more aware of what is going on around you in order to stay on top of what you are doing and making sure that you are successful in all aspects of college. Although I had an adjustment issue, one of my eldest cousins who lived at home with my family has bipolar tendencies and they can sometimes become very serious.…

    1. Outline the circumstances that affected your academic performance during your most recent academic year. Be sure to indicate when events happened. I withdrew from two courses during the most recent academic year (Fall 2017 term) in which I received OSAP funding. This reduced my course load to 6 courses and delayed my graduation to the following winter semester where I returned to a full course load by adding the two dropped courses and in the spring 2017 semester, I enrolled in three additional out of pocket to meet my program requirements for graduation.…

As a first-generation immigrant, going to a four-year university straight after high school was always the plan. Life had a different idea, however. One General Education Diploma, two years and three mental illnesses later, the goal of getting a bachelor's degree is within reach. Much has happened since I started college, and resilience has blossomed into something that has kept me afloat through some of my toughest semesters. Resilience is my strongest trait as a student and learner, without it I would not be here at this point in my life, within months of transferring to a four-year university or a 3.5 GPA student.…
