Personal Narrative: My Impact On A Person's Life

Until I began tutoring inner city children, I never knew how much of an impact I could have on someone else’s life. I started my sophomore year tutoring a 1st grader named Dylan who struggled a bit in math and spelling, so every Wednesday morning when I headed to City Academy, we did worksheets that worked on addition and subtraction and then worked on some spelling exercises. This routine continued for a few weeks, so I was able to see that he was getting more comfortable with the information as well as with me. He began to open up to me and we started to form a relationship other than just student and tutor, we became friends. He would come into the library every Wednesday morning promptly at 7 am with a huge smile on his face and always came running up to me, excited to learn. …show more content…
He came to me that morning with his math test, which he got a 100% on; now while this may seem small in the big scheme of things, for him, this was a huge accomplishment. His eyes shone with excitement and he had the biggest smile on his face; but his excitement isn’t what really got me, it was the fact that he came up and thanked me for helping him so much. I was almost shocked that he thanked me, for it was his effort and attitude that got him that far, but I guess I helped to change his attitude towards the subjects he struggled in through my determination to help him learn.
