Personal Narrative: My Ideology Of Social Justice

Growing up as a black female, has greatly influenced my ideology of social justice. Growing up the first lesson that the elders in my family taught all us children was, “ In this society you already have one strike against you”. Being a black woman the was said to be a second strike against me. I never really understood their teachings until, I was much older. As children I don’t think we realize how ugly the world truly is. In my youth there was such innocence, I didn’t understand the stares, or when people followed me around stores, and the racial comments didn’t mean much to me either. As a younger girl I wasn’t bothered by any of it, To me the stares were just stares, the comments were just words. Social justice ran in the teaching of my family. We were taught and educated on the cruelty our ancestors endured from slavery, to Jim crow to the new Jim crow. Watching movies like, Roots, Mississippi Burning, and Panther allowed my to really visual the pain felt in black families.

My own personal trials as well as seeing the inequality in the world, made me want to take action. Being a sociologist means really taking a look at the world, questioning to understand and wanting to make the world better. Coming to college also shaped my views. UCSC has should me not to be afraid to look for the problems in the world and want to fix them. Sociology to me is one of the toughest majors, because it forces you outside of the innocent mindset the world around us is perfect. Sociology makes you look for the imperfections, it's the work of the compassionate.
