It is also very common in the United States. White privilege is naturally ingrained in our society many people would not say it exists. “Whiteness is synonymous with privilege,” (McDermott and Samson, 2005). This is the most fundamental aspect of White privilege. I can have it and not even realize it. One example of White privilege in America is not ever having to think about how my race or ethnicity reflects upon how people will treat me. I also have White privilege because people treat me nicer or are more lenient with because of the color of my skin. “-some privileges make me feel at home in the world. Others allow me to escape penalties or dangers that others suffer,” (McIntosh, 1992). The amount of Blacks pulled over, arrested, or incriminated are proportionally much higher than Whites. This is only one example about how non-Whites in America are treated differently. White privilege can be given in names and not even in have to be based on skin color. My name being Megan Wilson would give me a leg up in an interview rather than someone named DeMarcus Jackson. White privilege is gives me access to better educational, employment, and housing opportunities. I did not always realize my White identity gave me these privileges. I knew racism existed because they teach about slavery pretty early in schools. I used to think racism was easily defined into black and white. Little did I know that this wording was also racist.
