Personal Narrative: My Identity In The United States

Identity is a complex fluid and static concept that takes many distinct shapes and forms over the years. Each and every person in society has their own idea of identity and what it means. To me, identity equates to the labels and beliefs I affiliate myself with at the time. Personally, my identity has changed tremendously in the last few years of my life or rather I just started to accept and acknowledge my various identities to a more encompassing and inclusive extent. Through this piece, I will discuss how I identify myself and which of those identities I hold closest. To start, I identify as an Asian-American or to be more specific a Vietnamese-American. In all honesty, I have always struggled with this identity growing up in an American society that embraces assimilation and being white. However, I never denied being an Asian-American, but I also would not flaunt this aspect of my identity. Rather, it was more the ascription that came with identifying as a Vietnamese-American that I struggled and fought with. Growing up in the years following the Vietnam War, there was a lot of anti-Vietnamese sentiment that was passed from parents to my classmates. That sentiment made it …show more content…
I identify as such because the democratic party and liberals are people who fight for the rights and equality of others regardless of their identity. For this attribute, I am extremely proud to identify as a liberal or a democrat especially during such divided times in United States history. I was also drawn to this party not only because of their drive to fight for minority rights but also on socioeconomic and environmental issues. I did not identify as a democrat or even have a political affiliation until my later years in high school, not because I did not believe the subject was important, but because I was not well informed on the matter and could only see generalities of the two major U.S. political

I braced myself every moment since you said those words for the hurt that would come. It was inevitable, and the dread resided in a distant place in my mind, preparing my body to implode the moment our love parted. I almost felt it the night of graduation. Most people will talk about their family history and go back to their grandparents or even great-grandparents to see where they came from, but most people don’t think about America and how that became the great country it is today! Columbus came over to America, thinking it was India, looking for undiscovered land. Even though he made a big mistake, it led him to discover America and now millions of people live here. One main connection I have to America is that I was born here in Abington Hospital, on February 6, 1996. Fourteen years later I made my own discovery: volleyball.…

I am the only member of my family born in the United States. My parents, brother, and sister immigrated after the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, where thousands were murdered as India descended into nationalistic bloodshed. My own father nearly died: he was pulled off a train by an armed mob, beaten unconscious, and left for dead on the tracks. Shortly thereafter, he gathered everything he had and brought his family to Iowa City. That violence left scars on my father’s body, and it lit a fire in my soul: a desire to live free, and to help create a world where others have freedom.…

Around seven billion people live on planet earth right now, and out of these people no two people will be the exact same. I am not going to be like a person who grows up in upper class Beverly Hills. Despite the many reasons for this, a main aspect would be the environment I was raised in. I was born and raised in Madison, Alabama of the United States of America. This alone is going to make my identity as a person different than that of someone raised in china.…

Throughout my life I have had a relatively unobstructed route to my future, I had caring parents, a small supportive school, and a group of friends with whom I could relieve stress. My hardship was not an outward struggle but and inward one. We, as modern Americans, are forced to adapt to our idolatrous society which promotes living like most celebrities who, therefore, have the ability to massively impact the average citizen. This type of culture suggests a “proper” lifestyle that all should adopt, meaning that those who chose to be unique must suffer.…

I am a child from a first generation immigrant family, only child in the household with the power of delivering Conan show in Korean. My copy of Laughing Without an Accent by Firoozeh Dumas is full of circles, high-lights, stars, folded corners, and side notes. There were countless moments where I had to take a deep breath recovering from laugh or gasp of total agreement. One of the chapters in Dumas’s autobiography, she states: “Most immigrants agree that at some point, we become permanent foreigners…” Her statement puzzled me, it was the very truth that I did not dare to let it out.…

This night was to be unusual, for as I fell asleep I found myself in a nightmare, but not an ordinary one; not one that people fear because of an imminent demise, but instead fear of reflection. I lie my head against my pillow that night with no idea what was to happen, but the dream coming would change my perspective… permanently. I found as I awoke in a new reality, I was heading to an unknown destination on a airplane. Looking out the window, the skies shined with pure sunlight, and that sunlight bouncing off the misty clouds that ran on the horizon like the hills. Upon finished descent of the plane, I exited to find myself in an unfamiliar place, and in the middle of my confusion, a phone call came in.…

My second chance in the United States. It is difficult in a country where opportunities are very few a country where poverty and violence are not allowed to grow to the person or the country. Since my childhood I dreamed to be in United States every time I looked at a plane passing I would always come running and screaming saying "someday I will fly to the United States in a big plane like those flying birds in the sky". When I was 8 years old, I had the opportunity to come to the United States and although I didn’t get the chance to fly in an airplane.…

Coming to the States was a huge transition – a decision to leave my family, my friends, my home, and everything else I was familiar with for the past 18 years of my life. The word “culture shock” does not even get close to summarizing all the struggles of an international student, but despite all the difficulties, I am absolutely loving it. Immersing yourself in a different culture is such a unique experience – it challenges the ideas that you have long regarded as “facts,” introduces you to different people through discovering a whole new way of communication, and really allows you to grow as an independent and open-minded individual – and I definitely want to go through it again, this time better prepared. Thus, I have had my mind set on…

I have been a student of the United States of America’s economy for many years. I have been amazed by the opportunity that seems, or did seem, to be available to anyone who is willing to work hard. Prior to having children, I focused on the day-to-day needs of living; I did not worry much about retirement or building financial wealth. Today, things are different, I think constantly about retirement, I worry about the state of our country, and try to imagine how difficult becoming successful in life will be for my children. I am writing on this topic because it is something that I am passionate about, it is something that I know about, and it is something that is of great concern to me.…
