I grabbed my backpack and ran downstairs to the basement. My school wasn’t built for the use of students but for the use of soldiers because it was used as a bomb shelter for citizens to use as a hideout in case there was a war happening.
As I’m making my way down the stairs, my Husky dog comes by my side and I am grateful for his protection. As I enter the shelter, there is a maze of hallways that were used to protect soldiers and citizens. I tried to find a spot farthest away from the door, knocking

Walking on to the Lucas Oil turf as a Carmel Marching Greyhound for awards at Grand National finals after an exhilarating performance of “What a Tangled Web We Weave” was a feeling of pure accomplishment. As a sophomore, I had done this once before, but this time was different. The whole band knew we were in the running for the national title. Avon and Broken Arrow were our biggest competitors. Earlier in the season we won ISSMA state, so coming into nationals we knew we had a pretty good chance of being exceptionally good.…

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

My foot fell asleep as I was crammed inside the dark closet hiding from them. I could hear the faint gunshots in the distance, yet, as time passed by, the gunshots became louder and louder. The gun smoke which leaked in through the walls, made me nauseous as it filled my lungs like a gas chamber. Though I dared not to cough, in fear that someone would find me. Nauseous and confused, I listened to them as they were all yelling something in German.…

I slowly moved towards the noise, stopping at each door in case I heard anything. At the fourth door from my room, the noise was the loudest. I pushed it open, and revealed a corridor almost identical to the one before. The only difference was that this one had a large pair of double doors at one end. Knowing that that door would lead me to someone important, perhaps even the one who ordered my changing, I headed to it, determined to confront whoever was past the sturdy oak.…

When I was born to Jared Houston and Sarah Houston, it was very evident from the early stages of childhood and onward that something was very wrong with me- in a weird, but extraordinary way. The thing was that I was a born magician that possessed magical powers. This had good effects on the world that surrounded me; but unfortunately, in likeness to the amount of good effects, there were bad effects. Sometimes, as a result of the good effects that came with these magical powers, I could heal anything or anyone that had some sort of wound, especially fatal ones, send psychological messages to other people, etc. It was one ordinary day in 4th grade that I discovered just how dangerous my special powers could be- as much as they were useful.…
