Personal Narrative: My House In Chicago

Improved Essays
I wake to the sound of my alarm at 6am. Opening the floral shades, I find the sky is still dark, the world is still asleep. But why sleep in in a place like Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey when I can sleep in anytime I want at home. Tiptoeing down the stairs, the floorboards creak beneath me. The house is old, used, weathered. It's nothing like my newly built, modern house in Chicago, but something about that makes it feel more homely. The smell of coffee wafts through the air. I pour a cup, take a sip and embrace the fact that this coffee is for taste, not necessity. Then, I dress in the warmest clothes I've brought, it's not like the cold is unusual for me, I live in Chicago, it's the crispness of fall that is felt here more than anywhere.

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

It was July 2nd, 2010 and we were at my brother’s last freshman baseball game of the year. After that we got home and got our bags made sure we had everything and then we hit the road it was about 4:30 p.m. when we started to head to Chicago. I was excited because it was my first time being out of the state of Iowa. On the way down to Chicago we were listening to the Cubs game and they won that game and the next day was the game we were going to.…

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

I grew up in a neighborhood where a tourist can capture awe-inspiring pictures through their phone's or camera's. Pictures that will bring out how rich this community is. Rich in culture, food, music, and art. Pilsen, The Heart of Chicago, is beautiful in and out. From the art located in almost every corner, to the kindest hearts that live in the people who live in Pilsen.…

Ah, Chicago, the Windy City, a famed metropolis known for its wholesome American values, deep-dish pizza, and its friendly, carefree, community. Nothing quite exemplifies the Founding Fathers’ vision of America like the Second City. Chicago is the only place where one can truly appreciate the equality and justice generations of Americans have fought to achieve. My journey began as many Chicagoans days do, to the hymn of police sirens and traffic.…

I used to live on Irving Street, right on the border of Queens and Brooklyn. The Mexicanos and Puertorriqueños called it el barrio— the neighborhood. A place where they could hide from white supremacy and racism while enjoying themselves with their people, and, boy, did they know how to party. Coke, pot, meth, whatever your debauchery required. This was the place to get it.…

I hadn’t been home in almost a year but as I rode through the south-side of Chicago I noticed nothing but run-down buildings throughout the black and brown communities. What was once local shops, churches, community centers, schools, homes, and gardens were now replaced by empty lots filled with patches of dandelions and weeds. Developing and uplifting communities of color has been my main focus for several years. Recently, there has been a perpetuated distortion of Chicago; without any signs of rebuilding the community, restructuring the educational system, or providing any form of economic support. If history had shown us anything, it is that we can not depend solely on the governmental system to provide equitable access to economic, social, and educational opportunities.…

As one of the biggest cities in the United States, Chicago stretches two hundred and thirty seven miles through the state of Illinois. Chicago has roughly two million people living in one city which is one of the many reasons it is unique. That is more people than the whole state of Iowa. The town of Chicago is one unique city compared to small town Fort Madison with the super structures over towering the city, the cultural differences in the food variety there, and ethnically diverse music are some things I can’t find in Fort Madison. When I think of Chicago the first thing that comes to my mind is; the multiple story, high rise, super structures we call skyscrapers.…

A Trip to Chicago Who would of thought that Chicago experienced the four seasons. Since I live in Miami, Florida we don’t experience the four seasons, so when I saw the colorful leaves for the first time I was in shocked because I’ve never seen that in my life. On Thursday October 19th, 2017 taking a trip to Chicago with my family was fascinating because we flew on an airplane across the United States, got to see my brother Christopher graduate from the Navy, and we took a tour around the beautiful city of Chicago. First of all, taking a spontaneous flight to Chicago for the next three days was nerve racking because we had booked the flight without knowing if my brother had passed his final test from boot camp.…

As I world controller, I find that there are two types of citizens in this civilized world. Some dedicated to the happiness and, well, they are happy; some have other thoughts like liberty and God, so they are not happy. But I am a third type, who do not care which side prevails. I might appear to be a strong advocate of World State principles.…
