When I was shadowing an osteopathic family medicine physician, Dr. Anthony Lopresti, I came to appreciate how the philosophies of osteopathy coincides with my own. My passion in osteopathic medicine was confirmed when I comforted a distressed patient which made me realize how important patient satisfaction was to me. The ideal practice of medicine she spoke of also resonated my own beliefs of practicing medicine: to consider the person…

Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

Harvest homes was less of a choice of volunteering than a responsibility to. Two years ago my mum was offered a job at this facility by some of the friends that she volunteered with.
