My high school struggled with graduation rates and the very few that graduated and went to college often dropped out. The school system did not prepare students to do well in college, only to graduate high school and matriculate into a trade. As a result, there were very few AP classes and no SAT prep courses available. In addition, I was one of very few minorities. There was not much support or motivation offered, rather obstacles intentionally placed. Teachers perpetuated the racist ideals children were taught at home. I had to work even harder as a black woman to show that I was smart.
