Personal Narrative: My High School Spanish Class

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons and we also did several examples to new lessons. I very seldom ever became confused with a lesson and if I did he was always open to talk to anyone in the class personally about questions or just for …show more content…
The other really great thing about the class was Sr. was very direct, he would tell you what you needed to do and be straight forward with us as well. He cared about students but he took no pity in lazy student’s grade. Nonetheless, he would still engage in discourse and understood that some people didn’t care enough for good grades in his class but that didn’t make him the least bit hostile he would just simply let the student know that they were not going to do well in his class if they didn’t try to become better. Now I know this won’t apply to a college course but Sr. always had snacks for his students, mainly his Spanish four students. We got a lot of snacks while we were working on a difficult translation in class. I might of digressed a little to much but thats some of my honest opinions on what made his class so enjoyable and a positive learning environment. I understand that no every teacher teaches the same just like no every student learns the same, reiterating what I spoke to you in class is I really appricate you as a professor going the extra mile to understand us students. That coalesces with the positive environment that Sr. K provided his students, your already making your class a positive environment for me to

I Ashley Zeledon am highly interested in the position of Treasure of alpha mu gamma, because I would be the perfect fit for the position. If given, my incentives are that I am native English/Spanish speaker who is highly motivated to learn a third language, and because of this strong interest in distinct cultures and traditions, I am self-teaching myself Korean. My concern for The National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society stems from my interest and recognition of the importance of communication, as well as my strong belief that language brings people together. When you approach someone in their native language it immediately brings you closer, breaking down barriers and forging strong connections.…

This mistake that I’m writing about took a rather long time to learn that it was a mistake. Ever since I was a child my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. Probably due to the fact that my family is Spanish and that half of my relatives speak Spanish only. I never got into learning Spanish, and well they couldn’t blame me, I only started speaking English when I was six. Before that I was using basic sign language which I have now forgotten.…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

I Believe As I took the small child’s hand in my own and looked into her fearful eyes, a connection was formed between us which required neither words nor condition. As her mother sat down, the girl ran to her, hiding in her lap as the doctor began to talk. I gleaned bits from their rapid Spanish: “Mi niña no quiere comer,” which translates to “My child does not want to eat.” I looked back to the frail, frightened child, her face still concealed in her mother’s lap.…

Family can be annoying until you realize they are not. As a young girl, I remember the uneasiness that would wash over me whenever I had to speak Spanish with my family. My flushed cheeks were testament to my lack of proficiency. My family constantly picked out the words I mispronounced or misplaced in my sentences. Oftentimes, my grandparents would give me an ultimatum: to speak Spanish or not to speak at all.…

This program is a unique opportunity unlike typical semester long Spanish courses. The ability to focus solely on Spanish multiple hours a day, five days a week is something that would benefit me greatly. I thrive best when I am immersed in a subject, especially when it comes to learning a new language. This program would offer me the best environment and an abundance of resources to build a strong foundation of knowledge for future Spanish courses. The greater level of proficiency I am able to gain now the better prepared I will be when taking more rigorous Spanish courses in my college career.…

Stocker and Mrs. Morales also did an excellent job engaging the students in classroom discussions. One day Ms. Stocker began to teach a lesson on kindness. She first asked the children what they think kindness is and how they could be kind to others. One student even decided to share a story about a time that someone made her upset, because they were mean to her and how she wishes that they were kind instead. Ms. Stocker then began to read a book to the children and throughout the entire time, she stopped and asked them questions, such as “What would you do?”…

I have always been fascinated by the complexities of the human mind. During my time as a Sunday School teacher’s assistant, I was always drawn to the eager children who soaked up information like a sponge. Attending class every Sunday gave me a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of companionship. The class I helped teach was in Spanish. Because of that fact, Spanish was the dominate language spoken, although the children—ages three to six—were constantly switching between English and Spanish in a very fluid manner.…

On the first day of my college freshman Spanish course, I realized I was the only student who was neither a native speaker nor had I years of Spanish classes behind me. I had never studied Spanish - or any foreign language - and four foreign language semesters is required for my degree. It was the first day of class, and I already felt hopelessly behind. I asked my professor’s advice about what is the best way to learn Spanish. Following her advice, I drilled vocabulary flashcards and verb charts into my head everyday.…

A time when I struggled was when I was in Spanish 3 in Horvath’s class last year. The 3rd year of Spanish is infamous for its difficulty compared to the other years and many Spanish 4 students express that the skill needed to do well in the 3rd year class surpasses the 4th year one. Not only was the grammar difficult, but the oral and listen portions were more arduous as well. When faced with such a strenuous class, it was very stressful; my whole standard of studying and work quality would need to be altered in order to succeed. Slowly, I began using other resources and asked informed students to show me how certain things were done.…

In my high school writing was a little different than others. While most were in normal 9th and 10th grade English, I was in Read 180 and Century 21, which both of these classes aim more towards making us better readers not writers. Before my junior year my school changed things up a bit and made juniors and seniors picked what kind of English class they were interested in. In read180 once a week we had to read an article from the newspaper or a quote the teacher posted on the board; for the newspaper we had to write a six sentence paragraph of what it was about; the quote we had to say what it meant and why we think that or connect with it.…

The first nine weeks of school I have been struggling because I have been slacking and not been focusing as much I should have been and some of my grades are reflecting it. High School have so many different distractions but you have to learn how to stay focused on your work no matter what because your work comes first. Classes this semester were challenging honestly because all of them are harder than all my previously years of school from Ms. Aurelian’s World History class to Math Two. In math two class it took me a while to get back into the understanding of it because I hadn’t did math in a good while so I had forgotten things but towards the middle and end of the first nine weeks I started to get my groove back and perform better in class. My World History class it is just a lot of note taking and comprehension and a lot of studying and test that by far is my hardest class because I do not like to study at all and in return of me…
