Personal Narrative: My High School Football Team

Decent Essays
One time that leadership has applied to me was last year when I was given the opportunity to play defense for my high school football team. I was blessed to start the whole year and lead our team to the school’s first state championship victory. Throughout the season, coaches began to notice my leadership and how motivating I was for others. The team respected me and what I told them whether it was focusing on doing better in the classroom or preparing for the next opponent. However, being a leader comes with responsibilities and duties that others aren’t willing to accept.. For example, during the end of the season my coach told me he needed me to play defenses and offense because he felt that as a leader I would be able to humbly accept the challenge. I immediately said yes because it would help the team and give us a chance to win the state championship. …show more content…
Even though I didn't like offense, I couldn’t let my coaches or teammates see. Therefore, I tried to stay mentally strong and lead by example just like I did on defense.. After I knew all the plays, coach put me in and and immediately the offense saw positive results. By using my leadership skills, it gave me the chance to communicate with the offense and encourage them to do better. Most of the guys were scared because they had never been in a playoff game. With my experience from similar situations I was able to relate to them and guide them through it. Because of my leadership I helped contribute to our playoff run and eventually a win in the state championship. After my season on offense and defense I realized that using my leadership skills could help positively influence others to do their job

As the sun plummets to its end on a Friday evening, in a small town just north of the capital of Texas. Businesses become calm and streets become lifeless, as an entire community packs into a stadium anxious to see their team go into battle versus that week’s opponent. The level of excitement that has been accumulating all week, rings throughout the stadium as everyone longs for the opening kickoff to heal their Friday football fever. As a four year old I wasn’t able to realize that I was witnessing the greatest football team to ever come through Burnet High School, as they demolished every team that was brave enough to step in front of them week after week.…

I had just entered my junior year in high school and was back to playing football, my grades were good so far and my A.D.D. medication was helping me a lot. Zach and I had just arrived at the union school for a junior varsity game against Oceanside high school, we geared up and got ready for the game. I started the game at quarterback and the game wasn't going well for us, which didn't come as a surprise because jv games are never enjoyable. I took the snap and rolled out to the left side of the field, no one was open so I tucked the ball under my arm and started to run up field, I had room to move, suddenly a linebacker running at me from my side started to shorten up his steps and set himself for a tackle, he tackled low but I…

As a sophomore, I had to opportunity to get lots of playing time in varsity games and being a young player on the team, getting big playing time, I felt I had to take the leadership role in my sophomore class. Now that I am a senior on the team, I feel more of that weight on my shoulders. Being on the court most of the time, I feel it’s part of my duty, on and off the court, to be a leader for the girls. Keeping them serious in practice to just being someone they look up to when they need guidance, I feel those situations is what really taught me the leadership qualities. I’ve also inherited the leadership quality my senior year when I was chosen to be the student section leader.…

One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…

As with most groups of small children, there are always a few who don't want to follow directions. I had to be able to control the situation professionally and quickly, so the others didn't follow the bad example. I had to lead by example to achieve the best results. This experience allowed me to learn my leading style and to develop myself as a more well-rounded person.…
