Personal Narrative: My High School Career

Though I am not even half way through my high school career, I feel as if I can still be a help to those who are just beginning. High school is probably the most important part of your life that you are responsible for in our teenage years, so it is important not to mess it up. There are a few concepts that I have figured out by myself that I wished someone would have told me. Those of which include never procrastinate, think about your future, learn how to manage your time, and do not settle for less than your best. My first recommendation is that you don’t procrastinate. It can be single handedly the worst thing you could do for yourself. It will cause you to not be able to give your best and make you lose a lot of sleep. Even though I have been known to type my best papers burning the midnight oil, it still adds a lot of unneeded stress. Those late nights typing the papers that were assigned a week ago are not all that tough, but the next mornings are. On one hand, you finish the assignment. But on the other, you are tired all of the next day, so it becomes more difficult to focus and to learn. Studies have shown that if you stay up the night before a test, you will not do as well as you …show more content…
It infers that you should settle for something that is close to what you were going for but not the actual goal. That saying needs to be adjusted to say, “Shoot for the moon, but bring more ammo for adjustments.” My baseball coach always tells us that the phrase “good enough” is ruining our generation; I agree. I see it all the time, people settling for something that is not as good as the original goal. What I recommend is to do your best; and if you do mess up along the way, be ready to correct yourself and finish what you started. In other words, if you get a B but are trying to get an A, do everything you can to fix

Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…

Arriving home after a long and monotonous day of school, I lob my backpack against my trusty chair and it collapses to its side. Conversely, I find myself wanting to do the same. What I had learned and what I had to do were a couple of the things that went through my mind as I reflected on the day. School work was something I could not have said that I found fun or interesting, however, I could also not have said that I found the work I did insignificant, right? The work in high school all seemed like preparation for college, but I was not sure if that was what I really wanted.…

I am very grateful for those who have influenced me over my high school years whether it be my teachers, advisors, parents, or friends. Although all have had a great impact on my life at some point, I have to say the person who had the biggest significance on my life was easily my 8th grade teacher, National Honor Society Advisor, and mentor: Mrs. Mindi Phelps. Having first met her as my 8th grade English teacher, I did not know how much this woman would mean to me now, as a senior in high school. She believed in me and pushed me out of my comfort zone, was there for all my successes, as well as my failures, and still is to this day even though she moved to Florida at the end of my junior year. I first met Mrs. Phelps at the beginning of my 8th grade year as my English teacher.…

During my ninth and tenth grade years I homeschooled and worked a full time job, maintaining a 4.5 GPA and being active within a homeschool group. I would have loved to continued homeschool throughout high school but when my Mother and I moved from the coast back home to Asheboro to be with family, my Mom had to go back to working full time. So off to high school I went, well it turns out real high school is not like the musical that I somewhat expected. Joining as a sophomore it was difficult fitting in at times. Everyone had their group of friends and they were not looking for new ones!…

After spending three years in high school, I accumulated a total of three credits. "I'm averaging one credit a year," I said to my mom. " At this rate, I'll graduate in twenty years. " My decision, at that moment, seemed easy and when I was 17 years old, I dropped out of high school. Soon after, I started working in Manhattan's Jewelry District as a diamond setter.…

It is very crazy to me to think that we have already been in school for a quarter. For the first time in my life I actually wish that time would slow down. I know people say “I want out of high school as soon as possible,” I think differently. Once you graduate, you have to face the fact that you are an adult now and your parents wont be there to help you as much. The faster you graduate, the faster your out into the real world at college or working.…

During that summer, I was running a lot of miles and competing in local road races almost every weekend. At one of these races, a parent of one of the young runners that I knew approached me to ask how my search for a teaching position was going. When I replied that I hadn’t had any luck as of yet, his eyes lit up. It seems that a teacher at the local parochial school that his children attended had just left to take another job and they were looking for a science teacher for grades seven and eight. He then asked if I thought I’d be interested in applying for the job.…

Imagine an alarm blaring at six in the morning, bringing sleeping and dreaming to a close. It’s time to wake up, prepare yourself for the day, and leave for high school. The vast majority of high school students derided this series of events. During the bulk of my high school career, I exhibited this mentality. My junior year occurred basically the same as the previous two and the one that followed, save for my first period class.…

Before I even knew it, I was in a never-ending challenge to pull up my grades. I decided to get serious about my future by doing little things I felt needed to be changed. I would advise students coming into high school to consider the changes they should make. I would ask myself questions such as, “Am I trying my hardest?”, “Why aren’t I turning in my homework?” After identifying the things I knew I needed to change, I worked to improve myself.…

However, what I lacked was hard work and consistency in by studies which caused significant problems in getting the grades necessary for a good education.…

The literacy agent that has positively influenced me the most in my academic career has definitely been my High School senior year English teacher Mr. Green. He convinced me to peruse a higher education after High School, when I wasn’t planning too. Over the course of that year we built a strong teacher to student relationship. We also became good friends as time went on and even spend some time discussing interests outside the classroom. He showed an interest in helping me as an individual since the beginning of the year.…
