Stage 1: Separation During my free time, I dedicated myself to talk to Jacob. This caused me to undergo a mental and physical separation from my everyday routine. I had to shift my schedule in order to talk to my friend and to also find time to finish any homework or assignments, eat dinner, and get enough sleep. In addition, the time zone in Utah (where he lives) is one hour ahead of the time in California, so we both had to use our time wisely. My atonement was the feeling of heroism, independence, and strength. I felt almost enlightened because I knew that I had made a difference all on my own. The greatest gift I have ever received was the life and friendship of Jacob. “S/he receives a “boon”” (Hood 22). I set my mind to saving him and I am more than grateful for sticking to my guns and prevailing. “Usually, the hero at this point becomes a selfless person who always cares for others before himself.” (Hood 23).
Stage 3: The Return I felt like everything had been restored to balance once again. All of the pain and despair had faded away. Jacob and I had earned our happiness back and continued to live our lives free of worry.
The Return to Society. I had returned to my daily routine, but I never stopped communicating with Jacob. I was finally confident that he could handle things on his own once again. At one point in time, he and I didn’t talk as frequently, but we never lost touch. Ever since we met we have been friends and three years later to today, we still are.
