Personal Narrative: My Hero

I walk into my grandparents condo, the sunlight is gleaming through the glass slider doors but my grandma's smile is brighter. I look around, I see my grandpa sleeping on the couch, and my grandma is calmly sitting on the recliner with her book. She looks up to see me and my cousins, and she offers us cookies that I know grandma made for us. Heroes aren't always fool-proof, they aren't the type you see in movies that fly through the air and save cities. In my mind, Michigan heroes are people that think of others before themselves, and love others unconditionally. That is why my grandma is my Michigan hero.

My grandma is caring, giving, selfless, nice and positive. My grandmother has had many health issues. She has oxygen tanks attached to her nose, she had lung cancer and pneumonia many times. Even through all of these terrible things, you would never hear a negative word out of her. When grandma had lung cancer it was hard for the whole family. Lung cancer is referred to as a death sentence. Instead of worrying before getting tested, she made and froze meals for my grandpa so that if she wasn't feeling well enough, he could still eat home cooked meals. My emotions for her were to (when I was 4 or 5) be sad because she could barely walk and I felt like she was always getting left out. Although now I look up to her. She is an amazing cook, probably the best in the family. I see her smiling in the window watching the kids play, and I wish that she could be there playing with us, but when we come over and talk to her, and maybe play a game or two, I see the light shining through her crystal blue eyes. Then I can tell that she loves being with us. She doesn't feel bad for herself, she feels glad for herself. She thinks about the people that don't have what she has, and she gives to them I think my grandma would fly through the air and save cities if she

Over the years and years spent on studying mythology, Joseph Campbell came up with the concept of The Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey states that all hero’s travel in a similar path and go through many similar stages that’ll lead them to their reward. However, not every hero’s journey has to involve obstacles as in slaying a dragon or trying to save the world. In my case, I had to do nothing but trying to make it through sixth grade year. Sadly, sixth grade was the year that I faced the most challenges, real world challenges at least.…

Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…

I spent many hours after school sitting in the sparsely active cafeteria, while she served the students with a smile on her face. My Grandma was a kind, selfless woman who would never let you go hungry. She instilled in me how important it is to take care of the people around you, so that when you are in need, they will take care of you. It’s cliche, I know, but the world truly did lose a great human being. After her passing, My Mimi, who is my father’s grandmother, took me in and supplied me everything I needed to succeed in life.…

I was there to witness her diagnosis and to care for her emotions to the diagnosis after. It was very hard for her to comprehend she was scared and in the times that she did remember she would always tell us to never forget that she loved us. Also, she informed us that she didn’t want her to be a burden and if at any point we needed to be put in a nursing home she would understand. So, with my great-grandmother I was able to see what she was feeling and how she felt before, during and after her diagnosis. With that being said we never put her in a nursing home we felt that between my grandmother, my parents, and I that we could work together to keep and we did just that.…
