Personal Narrative: My Hawaiian Heritage

Everyone is given a name at birth that is unique and special to each individual. This title travels with them wherever they may go and whatever they may do. Malia Hi’ilani Mae Kema was the verbal gift given to me the day I was born. It is a name that I hold dear to my heart because it carries the love of my ancestors. My Hawaiian heritage is the first thing someone sees when they look at me and the first thing that is spoken when they utter my name. My father has taught me to be proud of my unique Hawaiian culture and to live up to it. Throughout my life, I have been the minority in many ways. For most people, I am the face of my religion and race: I have the privilege to show them who my ancestors are and what they stood for. Polynesians are known to be extremely loyal and loving people, I have been blessed with both of these gifts. I have had the opportunity to move to different states and …show more content…
Once, I stepped onto Weber State University my fears, anxiety, and stress of college was thrown to the side. Even though I didn't know anyone at the institution, the campus already felt like a home away from home. On the soothing campus, I could not help but realize the peaceful yellow and orange leaves that started to trickle down to my path. I saw that Weber State is dedicated to creating a perfect atmosphere for students to grow and develop into intelligent, well-rounded adults. The elegant Math and Science building illustrated Weber State is an environment where I can thrive and grow. While walking the halls, I could feel the spirit and enthusiasm of the student body. The student Ambassadors described that Weber State not only has a great education program but also has various events and a magnificent student section. I am excited to experience and be a part of the roar of the student section at sporting events and see awe-inspiring

Maui Like Never Before Traveling to new and tropical places has always been a passion of mine. When I think of the word “vacation,” the first three things that come to mind are airports, hotel rooms, and the electrifying beach activities. Not too long ago, I took my third trip to Hawaii with my parents and my amazing boyfriend, Trey. Not only was it enjoyable, but it was an unforgettable experience filled with an abundance of happiness and laughter.…

Growing up in Hawaii, you're faced with multiple fun opportunities. For my self born in Kamuela of the Big island, being in the center of the island opened up many doors to many different activities. I grew up on a long narrow road that had many bumps and pot holes up and down the entire road. At the top of the road there was a small grade hill that I would bomb with a skateboard. My house was about three quarters the way down the road.…

In their articles, “Two Years Are Better Than Four” and “Are Too Many People Going to College?” Liz Addison and Charles Murray discuss how colleges now are much different than colleges in the past. The college experience has changed since people, such as Rick Perlstein, went to college. Even though the college experience is ever evolving, it can still be a very important part of someone’s life. Even if it is not at a “four-year brick-and-mortar residential college” (Murray 229) like many parents and high school faculty push students to go to right away.…

I recollect as a youngster growing up on the resplendent island of St. Croix being an active member of my elementary school’s quadrille group. I was about ten years old. I recollect the carnival parades, going to horse races, attending the St. Croix Agrifest in February and attending the festival village in December. I recollect learning how to macramé in summer camp. I recollect learning how to paint mocko jumbies, and make papier mache fishes in art class.…

A metaphor to thoroughly interpret my own cultural identity would be the coconut delicacy known as Haupia. Not only for its elegant perplexion, but for the soft clouded stature that belongs to this alien creature, which taste is only permitted to the fortunate few occupying the native islands of Hawaii. Another perplex root in the tree of my culture is Lei-making. The breathtaking row of an aligned set of flowers to form the Lei is one of the prime connections to the base of the hawaiian culture by contributing to the ancient craft itself. A more well-known phenomenon that had one of its origins among the islands of Hawaii and is still dwelled upon to this day is surfing.…

It is a beautiful day in Hawaii where people are lying on a white sand beach enjoying the hot sun beaming on them. There are kids laughing while making a sand castle and people swimming in clear blue water. Then all of the sudden there are shouts and screams of people saying “SHARK!” There are five dorsal fins peaking out of the water searching for their prey! People in the water start to swim frantically to shore.…

It had always been a dream of my family’s to someday go to Hawaii and it had finally happened. We had been planning the trip for over a year and before I knew it, I was already there on the gorgeous island of Maui. The first morning we were there we decided to go up to the summit of Haleakala to watch the sunrise. Haleakala is a volcano that has been dormant since 1790. The summit of Haleakala is so serene and definitely one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.…

I’ve always wondered if I grew up the correct way, or at least the way Hispanics are supposed to be raised. If that even is a thing. I didn’t know the backlash I would get for not embracing my heritage. Why can't people just accept you for the way you are? I was in for a rude awakening for my childhood years.…

I expected Hawaii to be tropical paradise, but it’s not. My shack is very tiny and there are at least 1 million unknown creatures. I work 10 hour days, 6 days a week. The plantations are hot, dry, I have to cover up, and the Luna (overseer) is very disrespectful to me. My expectations were beyond not met because of the housing, unfair treatment, and horrible FOOD!…

Everybody has a unique identity that is built up based on the 7 categories of otherness. These categories include age, gender, abled body, race, sexual orientation, economic status, and religion. My identity is a very complex one, to keep it simple, i've divided it into three categories: things I do right now, things I like, and my cultural identity. What’s my complete heritage is it only one or a couple? Heritage has never been an endeavor I have looked into and because of this I know very little about my family’s origin. My grandmother is originally from Ireland and the only reason she ever came to America is because she found a man she really loved. That is the extent of all I know about my heritage and family history on that side. I will now try to explain the way of the Irish people and the traditions they uphold, as well as some history.…

As our lives progress, we become products of the accumulation of all the encounters and experiences that somehow manage to leave a mark on us. Of course, in our lives there are also negligible moments, much like beginning to do something but then forgetting your original intentions. However, there are also many moments we do consider important, and those we hold closely with even higher significance. A sum of these things that we’ve gone through, or things that have simply happened to us, are what make up our own cultural identity. Based on the nature of no one having the exact same experiences, all of our cultural identities are entirely our own.…
