Personal Narrative: My Hard Work

Decent Essays
My hard work pays off everyday. I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder in the second grade. Managing my ADD has been one of my most difficult challenges. Scared of the side effects of medication my mother decided that we would exhaust all possibilities before choosing to treat my ADD with medication. Over the years I’ve seen a Chiropractic Neurologist, worked with an Occupational Therapist and received interactive metronome therapy. I have learned strategies from these services that help me manage ADD without medication. I also have a 504 plan that allows me accommodations in school. Don’t get me wrong, it is still a struggle, but here I am in my senior year of high school applying to colleges. I am thankful that I have a family

There are several experiences in my life where I have felt that I was treated in an unfair manner, but the most recent of those experiences is the one that occurred to me only months prior to this application. Up until the beginning of November of this year, I used to believe that being a great and successful student would be the most rewarding accomplishment of my senior high career. As a result of this, I unwisely assumed that the most important thing in my life was how well I could do on the next test. I spent a meager amount of my time involved in anything else aside from my homework or studying; expecting to be fairly remunerated for a majority of my hard work. Earlier this year, I was indeed rewarded with an application to National Honors…

Reading The Explosive Child by Ross W. Greene and Superparenting for ADD by Edward M. Hallowell and Peter S. Jensen has shed some light on teaching students with different challenges and abilities. As Greene puts it, “kids do well if they can” (2010). This statement is something we as educators should keep in mind when working with students who exhibit behavioral challenges or may be displaying signs of ADD. Greene tells us that if our students had the capability of dealing with the challenges set before them adaptively, they would do so. Children do not enjoy the struggles, arguments, and other negative consequences of their maladaptive behavior any more than the parents and teachers do.…

Though I’m still developing my legacy, I like to think that most people who know me, regardless of how well, consider me a person that can put a smile on nearly any face. From my time in high school as photo studio assistant getting babies to giggle on camera to my work as a personal trainer cracking jokes to help clients through the worst parts of their workouts; I learned that a little laughter can improve any situation. While this is a fairly simple impact to have on people, I do believe that it’s a powerful one. My own experiences with bereavement, chronic ill health and periods of poor mental health have shown me the value of a person that puts in the effort and time to get a smile out of someone. Though happiness is a pretty fleeting…
