Personal Narrative: My Gymnast's Career

Today was the day, the day I have been dreaming about for almost my whole life. I was going to be in the Olympics. I was so nervous, my heart was pounding and my stomach felt queasy.
“Julianna, are you ready to compete in the most important competition of your whole gymnastics career?” Asked my coach, Colleen.
“I think so…” I replied.
I didn’t feel ready. I have been training for fourteen years for this day, but that didn’t feel like enough training for the biggest competition of any gymnast’s career. How was I supposed to do good when I could barely get it through my mind that I was actually at the Olympics fulfilling my childhood dream? “Up next on beam is Julianna Smith.” announced the announcer.
My heart was pounding, my palms were sweaty, and stomach started hurting even more. I mounted on the beam. I did my first skill which was a back handspring step out, layout step out. I stuck it perfectly. I feel so confident when I’m on beam. This was the only time that I felt like I could do anything in the world and that was how I felt now. After I did my standing full twist, I knew all I had to do was stick my dismount. This skill could make or break me. Next thing I knew my feet were glued to the mat, the crowd was cheering my name, at this moment I knew I stuck beam.
After beam was vault. I set up for vault ready to make this one the best one I have ever done. I heard my name and I saluted. I started running and then I hurdled. This vault was going to be a good one. I landed…perfectly!
Up next was floor… my worst event. I waited for my turn and I felt more nervous as each routine ended. I was so nervous for floor, I just got new skills that I never competed before but today was my first time. I could hear my heart pounding it got louder, so loud I almost didn’t hear my name get called. It was my turn. I can do this I thought. My music started

“Apply all of your corrections, think about everything we have practiced, and have fun! Put your minds to what it is you want to accomplish.” These were the words of my synchronized skating coach before we took to the ice at Nationals. I was in the upper quarter of finishers and finalists, winning some events, losing others. I was happy, and had fun competing in the sport, reveling my recently discovered realization – as long as I continued to work hard and dedicate myself to the sport, I could do well. I trained and…
