One, Two, Three stick are the only three words in my head as I fly through the air before my perfect landing. My parents and teammates are screaming my name as I prepare to end my routine on the uneven bars. This was the very last meet of my gymnastics career. I can remember the first time smelling the chalk and listening to higher level gymnast as they landed on the mat. Quitting the sport I loved had made me realize that I need to start setting more goals for myself. Before my injury, my goals were mostly just about gymnastics. Now I have to set different goals in real life, which is for the better since I cannot do gymnastics forever. Before my injury gymnastics was all I thought about and I also did much better in school, but I was also more stressed. Gymnastics has taught me so much, especially patience which is why I did so well in school.…

I also support with strengthening and conditioning, guidance in nutrition and sleeping, and I also make sure the playing area is safe”. When he was young, he always adored being around the athletic trainer. It is Saturday morning and the ringing alarm clock wakes me from my deep sleep. I look over at the clock that reads 7:00 a.m. which means that it is time for practice. While all of my friends are still sleeping, I am on my way to my six-hour gymnastics practice. Many people think of gymnastics and see all the leotards and glamor, but what they do not see is the countless hours spent in the gym, bloody hands, broken bones, aching muscles, and tears of frustration and disappointment. I have only been a gymnast for ten years, but the life lessons that I have learned will last forever.…

As I walk into the the gymnastics gym, I look at the large golden trophies next to the wall, and the pictures of the gymnastic teams near the entrance. I see people clapping their chalky hands in the air, and watch people doing back tucks on the trampolines. I am starting to feel more confident, although I am also filled with fear, which was nothing new, thinking, “ So many things could go wrong”. Except, usually, nothing did, until March 25. I warm up as my ears are filled with the thud sound of people sticking their landings on the spring floor.…

Men’s gymnastics is not a sport of glamour, prestige, or recognition in South Carolina, but me being me, I begged my parents to sign me up. I participated in a rinky-dink gymnastics program at a local gym run by my city’s recreation department for roughly ten years of my life. My coaches were equivalent to second parents to me, and I competed with countless other gymnasts for those numerous years. However, as the years progressed, people came and went.…

After overcoming such insurmountable challenges, and becoming exposed to multiple therapy settings and treatment types my interest in physical therapy has only grown stronger. I made it my goal as a patient to learn and know what is being done and what options are available. I may know what it's like to have hemiplegia, but also comprehend the significance of how ankle foot orthosis (AFO’s) provide structural stability at the ankle, thus limiting plantar flexion during the phases of gait and how it may assist with foot drag. I also know what it's like to have excruciating back and neck pain due to bulged disks resulting from a massive car wreck, and yet I understand the basics of how to perform manual and mechanical lumbar and cervical…

Challenges: One challenge that I had to face in the last few weeks was a gymnast ran full speed into a balance beam and hit the front of his head. Understandably, he was in tears and complained of a headache. There were no instructors immediately around so I had to handle the situation on my own. After a few minutes, I was able to calm him down and ask him a few questions. He answered all my questions in a timely manner, and didn’t show signs of a concussion.…

“Blood, sweat, and chalk; never tears.” These words have guided my gymnastics career throughout high school. Pretty much starting from the beginning, I had to re-learn many skills and tricks that I had lost after quitting gymnastics for dance lessons in fifth grade instead of joining the competitive team. I lived for gymnastics and I still do. Walking into the gym always boosts my mood and gives me a rush of determination.…
