Personal Narrative: My Group Leadership Experience

My experience as a group leader was, at times, faced with some difficulty. I was a group leader on two separate occasions. My first experience was more difficult than I believed it was going to be. Our leadership assessment was divided into five sections to be scored by group members. The first section is how well I stimulated group participation. During my first experience as a leader, my average score given by group members was higher than I expected. I found myself focusing on what my next comment would be, rather than the comments being made by group members. During my second leadership experience, I believe I improved in this section. I found myself more comfortable facilitating the discussion. The next section is how well I focused on feelings, thoughts, and concerns in the here-and-now. I found myself worrying too much about how long I should let group members focused on vertical discussion versus horizontal. I have noticed that feelings are difficult to get out of some group members, when asked “how do does that make you feel,” a few members responded with non-feelings descriptions. During my first session, I could not identify a single pattern because, as previously stated, I was so wrapped up in my thoughts about finding the right things to say. Patterns are difficult to identify in a group such as this because it does not have a particular focus. Most discussions are somewhat scattered. In my second leadership experience, however, I did begin to notice a pattern between members goals and their statements. For example, I noticed that people are more comfortable discussing other people’s shortcoming rather than their own. I also notice individual patterns and discussions from certain group members.
