Personal Narrative: My Grandpa

Decent Essays
Well, a few years ago around 2012 and 2013, my grandpa was diagnosed with cancer, it was a devastating shock to people in my family, and to others. He seemed to always do somewhat well with his health, he was an active person, so no one really expected him to get something like this. We prayed and prayed for him to get better, but he never seemed to get that way. I can remember a time when my grandma’s church had VBS, my grandpa felt bad that he couldn’t come because of his plummeting health, he couldn’t really leave the house, he couldn’t really do anything, just because of this unexpected burden that happened. Somehow, he brought himself down there, it was quite amazing to see that he was so strong to do so. In fact, I remember where I was at, and my …show more content…
Another thing that I remember was when him and my grandma picked me up to take me to their house. I eventually settled in my seat, and I can’t help to notice that my grandpa’s hair seemed to be gone, I asked “Pops, what happened to your hair?” he responded quickly “Oh, I just shaved it off since I’m starting to lose my hair.” At that time I was kinda young to understand what was happening to my grandpa, but now that I look back at it, I’m pretty sure he was starting to go through chemo, and was starting to lose his hair, and he made some excuse to not worry me. Also, I remember another time when I stayed at his brother’s house, which was next door, and it was fairly late at night when my uncle Andy got a startling call from my grandma, I don’t know exactly what she said, but I remember him getting scared and looking outside, everyone followed, from what I remember, I saw every light in the house was on, and I think there may have been an ambulance or my grandma’s car on with the doors open. Also at that time I didn’t understand, but now as I look back at it, he had a health scare, this was when his health was getting very low, and he had to take it

My grandmother's biological father, my great grandfather, was born in the United States. His parents, Elida and Kristian Jorstad, were immigrants from Norway to America. This was not uncommon, being that from 1825 to 1925, more than 750,000 Norwegians settled into homes in Canada and the United States (lonelyplanet.com). They established a home in Iowa. Because of that, the transition was a major one.…

I couldn’t believe that I was stuck in boring old Pulaski, Virginia. What a perfect place to run out of gas on the annual trip from West Virginia to Florida. I had assumed that I would just lay out at the local all night pub. But as soon I entered the establishment, an old man greeted me at the door and he blocked my entrance. He said he wanted a chance to tell an outsider about the story of his great grandfather, Jack Jackson.…

I didn’t say a thing because I was too scared to know the news yet, I dreaded the worst. Soon after Grandma came back out she resumed making dinner, and Mom and Grandpa were back. I had finally gotten the courage to ask, “Grandpa are you going to be…

In early August of 2012, my dad and I decided to visit my Grandpa and Grandma Hurt in Florida. Family Introduction Creating this genogram was a difficult task for me because my parents and their siblings hardly communicate with each other anymore. Ever since the passing of both my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, the families have simply fallen apart. Many relatives have distanced themselves from their extended families, and no longer have a desire to interact with their siblings or cousins. Sociopolitical and spiritual issues have caused some members of both families to harbor resentment against one another.…

Option #3 – Grandparent Interview Family life has changed in different ways than I usually had assumed. I interviewed my parents, as well as my maternal grandpa and his girlfriend, for this assignment. Coming into the assignment, I did not realize just how much the norms of families and gender roles could change within the same family over numerous years. A lot of the expectations seemed to be similar between the generations yet take on their own degree of necessity and meanings. Sally Bugge is a 79-year-old from Council Bluffs, Iowa.…
