I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

I meander my way past the screechy screen door, letting it creak back into position. Immediately, I am assaulted by the smell of Cheerios, cashews, coffee grinds, and cookies from the Dollar Bin at Price Chopper. Thanks to the ever-present orchids sprouting throughout the house, the discounted snacks’ scent soon fades into oblivion. The gurgle of the Poland Springs bubbler echos in the background as I fumble for the hanging light pull. As I let it ricochet towards the ceiling, I jump at the sound of popcorn exploding on the stovetop, soon to be strung around the ten foot Christmas tree.…

I had the pleasure of interviewing my paternal grandmother Audrey; she is the last grandparent I have left. Since I was a child, she had never wanted to be called Grandma or anything of the sort. She was too cool for that. She prefers to be called Mimi, however I sometimes slip and call her “Gram” and she thinks that is pretty cute. She has two children of her own, my father who is the oldest with two children (girls) and my Aunt Star who has two children (boys).…

Due to a massive stroke and various other health complications, my grandmother fell victim to paralysis on the entirety of her left body at the unjust age of 73, and my mother was handed the sole responsibility of tending to her needs, be it physical, emotional, or economic. My family’s life, and most notably my own mother’s, was irrevocably transformed and became centered around my ailing Gege. On a chilling September day, as the leaves stained with their red and green and yellow hues had just began to fall, my mother made her way over to my grandmother’s townhouse in Lindenhurst. The previous night, they had made plans at nine in the morning for brunch at our house, a common activity for the mother and daughter duo connected at the hip.…
