When she came to America she moved to New York and she housed her nine children, her parents and two of her sisters. She also worked as a nurse. Later they moved to Florida. Although going through all of this requires a lot of strength, this is not what showed me that my grandma was strong. Before moving to New York, one of her children was shot in the eye and killed. Then in February of 2008 she lost her first born child and her husband. All of this requires a lot of strength.
Before she lost her husband and first child she had not one but two strokes leaving her partially paralyzed on the left side and with dementia. This is what really showed me how strong she was. I learned most of what I know about her from when she came to live with us. Her story has inspired me to want to become a nurse and taught me to be strong, but know when to ask for help, responsibility, and respect.

They needed us to be responsible over our homework and selves. And on a very rare occasion they counted on me to make sure my grandma was ready for bed when there was an emergency. This experience not only taught me how to take care of a diabetic, and be gentle with someone who has dementia and is partially paralyzed, but it also taught be to be responsible, manage my time, and to prioritize.
