Personal Narrative: My Grandfather Ben Jordan Sr.

I had the enchanted honor of knowing, respecting, and admiring one of the greatest role models that life has to offer. That role model is my grandfather, Ben Jordan Sr., born before World War I in the year of 1912, which ironically was his house number (1912 Bell Street). He was a lean man that touted a medium build with strong arms. His smooth, dark brown skin was a complement to his stature. He wore a crown of gray, salt and peppered-hair but most kept it bald. He was partially blind from cataracts, but could manage some visual images from the corners of his eyes. My grandfather was not considered a man who would “bite his tongue.” He was kind and spoke with a clear and concise voice. When he entered a room, it would swell with wisdom and all present would pay attention to him.
At mealtime he preferred to use an oversized ladle spoon. He loved to eat and tended to savor every bite.

He exercised patience by helping raise four children and over ten grandchildren. The disability of blindness only allowed him to show his strength and ability to persevere. Foremost, he never complained of his hardships.
Although blind, he would pull a red wagon with side rails about the city of Tifton, Georgia (where he was affectionately known as “the peanut man”); selling peanuts which he prepared from the previous night. The smell of fresh boiled and parched peanuts filled the house every night. He would individually bag the peanuts in 12-ounce paper bags and price them at 10 cents each. You could hear him coming from miles announcing over and over, “fresh boiled

Knowing that something special was going to happen that day, because she could feel it deep inside her soul, Charity sprung out of bed. Her grandpa had always said that she had the “gift of knowing,” the same as her grandmother, Mi 'thebe, had. Mi’ thebe was a Cherokee name that in English meant Shadowy Moon. As she stepped outside the old, log cabin she took a deep breath of the cool, fresh mountain air and then stretched her back, leaning from side to side to remove the stiffness she felt from sleeping in her not so comfortable bed, which consisted of a straw-ticked mattress atop a wooden bunk that seemed to became flatter each year as she grew older. Her grandfather had built the cabin some fifty-odd years earlier as a wedding gift for…
