Personal Narrative: My Goals For Myself

Improved Essays
As I stated in my midterm, setting goals for myself only allow me to become a stronger dancer. This semester in Ballet II, I personally believe that I have grown tremendously as a dancer in ballet. With this being my first semester in Ballet II, I had a few ups and downs throughout the class. With this being the case, I set three different goals for myself so that I could focus on fully reaching my potential the areas. These goals included: fully executing my petite battements and completing a double left pirouette. As I set these two goals, I realized that I not only wanted to focus on them, but I also wanted to just grow as a whole and become stronger. Doing my petite battements at the barre, I have struggled with beating back and front …show more content…
My ballet vocabulary has great improved and I am well aware of what each move is called. My spelling isn’t perfect, but I am getting there. Before coming to Coker, ballet vocabulary wasn’t as important to me as it is now. My old studio use to come up with our own words so that we could remember the move the way we saw it, so when I got here, I had to relearn everything. However, I knew the basic terms, but not the more complicated ones. As I completed my final exam in Ballet II, I was a little sadden that our time was over with Professor Jennings, but I couldn’t be any happier how well I’ve improved and how well I performed it. I made sure that applied all corrections to barre and center work that was given to the class as well as given to me specifically. The two goals that I set for myself at midterm are two goals that I’m not going to say I’ve accomplished, but I definitely can say I have improved. I am going to take these two goals with me as I progress into second semester. The one major thing that I am going to take away with me from this course is, the use of my head when performing. I am taking this with me because I have realized that no matter how low my leg is or how many turns I do, as long as you are performing it, the audience will be at awe when

Classical ballet was history being passed down until Balanchine arrived to change it. Balanchine was an obvious influence on early Forsythe and he accepts, “that the first works I did were very clear imitations.” Forsythe is even considered the “natural heir to Balanchine.” It was Forsythe’s technical advancements that set him apart from Balanchine. Forsythe’s research of movement assisted in the creation of his own style of performance.…

Chapter 1 Technique George Balanchine, upon a basis of classical foundations, created his own technique by challenging small elements of the basic ballet technique to give his style its own individuality. He focussed on; emphasising the hips, ‘broken’ wrists, big displaced arabesque extensions, fast footwork and working in parallel. These values are some of those that the School of American Ballet were founded upon. This was so that there could be a direct feed of dancers in to Balanchine’s company that were familiar in his style. Sanjoy Roy commented on how he believed that “ he (Balanchine) changed the image of the ballerina from a graceful fairy into a sleek greyhound.”…

When asked about my future after high school, I also have a hard time describing everything I want to get done because there are far too many things to name. The quote “ _____” (i want to be everyone and do everything and there isn’t enough life to do it all in) describes me to a tee, and I believe this college is the place I could do this in. Being a shy person for most of my life, many things were difficult for me. Specifically, last summer I had the opportunity for a summer job.…

Fitness and Goal Setting Knowledge Fitness and goal setting have been the main topic of conversation in this class. Whether we need to work on legs or arms today, or what we are going to do in the future. I learned that it is better to do quantity over quality when it comes to fitness workouts, and that it is always important to stretch and warm up your muscles before a workout to ensure you do not strain any muscles. For goal setting, I learned that if you pick a specific goal that you wish to achieve, like say to reach +10 in the fitness flexibility test, you can keep working towards that goal step by step, or in this case number by number, to reach your goals efficiently. When reaching towards a goal, you cannot just make it in one try…

So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus.
