Personal Narrative: My Goal In Attending Colorado Christian University

Trying to describe one event or experiences that influences my goal in completing Colorado Christian University isn’t possible. I would have to describe my life as a whole. Raising myself since 16 wasn’t easy, but I did it. Technically I’ve raised myself since 14, but I didn’t pay my own rent and bills until I was 16. I should have been legally emancipated but my dad always claimed me on his taxes. Not realizing, he was robbing me of my rights, potential government assistance, as well as my educational opportunities. I probably would not have the amount of college debt that I have now if I would have been emancipated. However, I do not hold any hard feelings, for it taught me to depend on myself. It was gone a year after I graduated. He didn’t financially help me with college at all because the money was gone. Through high school, he had me go through his accountant when it came to filing taxes, rather than me filing them on my own. He claimed me as a dependent so he wouldn’t have to pay in as much. I thought he was looking out for me by sending me to his accountant. Otherwise maybe the government would have caught that I wasn’t the average “dependent child”. What he did was a temporary fix for his financial situation. For me, he deprived me of government assistance as well as my educational opportunities. At the time, being emancipated meant I wouldn’t have had to struggle so much to pay my rent and I would have received food assistance. I put myself through high school by working at a local restaurant. I set my own alarm, paid my own bills, and I survived. So many people knew I was living on my own and did nothing; not because they did not care, but because they didn’t know how to approach the matter.
