In the beginning of the semester, she and I had a couple fallouts, which resulted in me getting kicked out of class. Never in a million years did I envision myself asking her for help. During our conference, I told her about my struggles with writing and previous academic adversities. I talked to her about being in a high level class and feeling confused, misunderstood and out of place. I talked to her about the importance of education and graduation in my family.…

I knew passing this class was important to her, and I wanted to help as much as I could. Realizing that her experiences were different than mine, allowed me to focus on using the tools I had accumulated in school to help her. Instead of getting frustrated when she didn’t understand, I changed and became more patient with her. I learned new techniques that were easier for her to understand, and I adapted my tutoring style to what she needed. I’ve always loved helping people, and being able to recognize other’s dispositional attributions allowed me to help more…

I'm not one to blow things out of proportion, I was only trying to figure out what I had to fix and how to fix it. Which caused her to get defensive and react the way she did. I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

Alyssa, the Tutor I was sitting in my sixth grade class, eager to see what we would be doing for the day. My teacher, Mrs. Sobus, was passing out papers from the tests we had last week. As I looked around, I saw everyone talking to each other and being happy with their grades and there I sat with a devastated face.…
