Personal Narrative: My Future Career As A Drum Major

Decent Essays
“Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them” -- John Maxwell. Acquiring the position as drum major this year will greatly improve my skills. Leadership is one of the most important skills as a drum major. As assistant drum major this past year, Cheyenne has really taught me a lot about being a leader within the band.
If chosen as drum major it will allow me to continue improving new and familiar skills. These skills include teaching, conducting, leadership, communication, and marching. Learning and enhancing these skills are reasons why I want this position. On top of enhancing my skills, this will prepare me for my future career as a music director / educator.

I believe myself to be outspoken enough to command band members to dress to one another, yet not too intimidating as to drain the fun out of the process. Since freshman year, I have improved upon my dressing to forms and getting to the right dot at the right time and having participated in theater has augmented my appreciation for correct spacing and saying true to the drill written in our drill books. I would love to see both underclassmen and upperclassmen improve upon their marching skills and ability to make forms and I would be honored to help them do so. As a brass captain, I feel as though I would benefit the band because I am enthusiastic and would encourage the brass put forth 100% effort toward every warm-up and play-through of the music. I would be sure to emphasize nuances of the music in rehearsal, such as dynamic changes and accent marks because I believe that a musical performance--no matter the ensemble--is not truly successful without genuine expression.…

I sat at every football game, studying the drum major’s posture on the podium, the position of their hands and watched their behavior while in the stands, watching as they were the perfect example of leadership. I did all of this until I finally had the chance to try out for drum major. And when the day for auditions came, I felt prepared, I felt ready. I had had 7 years of dreaming and practicing, part of me felt I had the position in the bag. I marched a routine, conducted at different tempos and practiced the commands typically called out during half time in front of all of the directors and walked away feeling confident.…

Successful organizations all require 2 things: a strong team and strong leaders to direct the team to victory, and the Marching Pioneers is no exception to this rule. With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Here are just a few reasons why I would like to be in the next generation of saxophone section leaders. Music is one of the many talents I would bring to Colonel By. Since grade two, music has played a significant role in my life because it is a different form of expression for the thoughts and emotions that are in my head. I really enjoy playing diverse melodies and hearing how distinct sounds can come together to create a single harmony. It is my hope to share my existing musical talents in the Colonel By Jazz Band and Concert Band as well as further develop my techniques with those who are more experienced.…

I've held this position for about three years. This job is one that has taught me how to communicate with performers and audience members alike. I'm also around and about every Wednesday night after classes as an intern (formally known as a Brabson Scholar) for the Children's Chorus. This allows me to get firsthand experience teaching children before I take on a class of my own. It also allows me to see the process of teaching a choir, which as an instrumental music education student, I wouldn't have otherwise.…

“I have homework in all of my classes and a three hour steel band practice? This has to be a joke!” I thought to myself, lumping my thoughts together while getting home from school. Lumping is when someone groups things together without discrimination, which in my case, normally involved a lot of school work. When I hear the word “lumping,” the week of the Steel Band’s radio show comes to mind immediately.…

He also mentioned that as a music director, he has to be weary of instruments and their placements, however even though there were a lot of cons on the job, he mentioned many pros. Some pros that he listed were that you really get to see students change as they start to mature throughout the year, there are some amazing students that you get to know very well even though they leave you to better things later, you get to see students succeed to better things and some students even come back to say hi once in awhile and finally he said “Even though I only have students for two years, some for one even, I get to change their lives with music and really see them smile every time they play their instruments or sing.” After having this interview with my former teacher, I believe that this is one of the most likely career paths that I will decide to pursue. Even though there are many cons that come with the job, the fact that there are also so many great things about it as well intrigues…

One of the leadership roles that has shaped who I am is my role in band. I have been involved in this program since I was in 6th grade.
