Personal Narrative: My Freshman Composition

Improved Essays
Before walking into room W3, I took a deep breath. The first day of Freshman Composition was finally here. The counselor told me Freshman Composition was a college course; therefore, I must take it. I was beyond regretting my decision of enrolling in it the day I stepped into Mrs. Scarborough’s classroom. Never would I have thought I would enjoy academic writing. From the first day of second semester I have learned a countless amount of tools for writing, while fixing areas that need work. Second Semester was a blast; I have picked up a countless amount of new skills. One of the most valuable skills I have learned is the writing process. With this process I can properly explore, plan, develop, design, and revise my paper. I believe that by taking the time to do these things you are guaranteeing yourself a well-put together paper. While starting an essay, I have learned you must learn your audience, and then focus on connecting with them. Another major part of the writing process is revising and editing. Throughout the semester I have taken all of my essays to Washburn writing center and used paper rater in order to check for errors. …show more content…
I have learned that with semicolons I am able to join two or more ideas together in a sentence. With transitions words I am able to transition into the next idea from the one before. Using semicolons gives the paper sentence fluency and structure. Along with semi colons I have also learned how to properly cite a source. Before I did not know how to make a works cited with alphabetical order and an indention in the second line. With this skill I am able to give credit when it is due and can back up my statement with quotes and

Well known for her research and publications on student writing, Nancy Sommers—now Harvard’s Expository Writing Program Director—discusses the student’s revision strategies on her journal College Composition and Communication: a compilation of some of her articles. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on three articles from Nancy 's journal: Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) with Laura Saltz as cowriter, Between the Drafts (1992), and the Novice as Expert (2004). Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) juxtaposes through a case study the revision strategies of first-year college students and experienced writers. Between the Drafts (1992) narrates her personal experience with revision strategies. The Novice as Expert: Writing the freshmen (2004) examines how first-year college students—Sommers believes— should approach writing.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

When I was a child I always though about business. I wanted to know how things worked, how money worked. I started watching my grandfather write his invoices, deposit checks, talk to people as if he knew them but they had just met. I wondered how he did it, how he played his cards right and got people to hire him.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

My talent is creating, and my form of creating is writing. Writing is a thing I've been doing since I was in the seventh grade. I started writing then because of a troublesome past, both my mother and my father had left my two other siblings and I all alone, leaving us with our uncle. It was very hard for me to adjust, I was fatigued and emotionally hurt, I turned to writing. My love for writing grew into a bigger part of my life when I kept dream journals.…

My writing experience in and out of school has almost always been seen exactly the same. It’s work, you do it for the grade and for some you suffer the entire time. On the occasional paper, usually one with no restrictions and you choose your subject, I find myself in a love and hate relationship with it. The fact being that writing papers has almost always been seen as homework for me. Have your paper done by this day, it needs to be this many words, and no grammatical errors just isn’t something I’d find myself getting hyped for every saturday night.…

Ever since my "young'un" days, I have wanted to do something creative with words. Chomping on my candy necklace, I wistfully proclaimed – “I want to make people think and feel, laugh and cry.” As an adult, I write short stories, novels, poems and articles. I have worked in the publishing industry in and around New York City – though not as a writer.…

The main thing that has surprised me is how quick assignments need to be done. When I was in middle school we got lots of time to work on essays during class. The first paper I wrote in high school I felt very rushed and worked for hours just to make sure I could get it done. After that essays became much easier and I don’t need to spend as much time on them.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. As I reexamine my work over the course of the semester, I have noted significant improvements in my writing and critical thinking skills. As a writer, I have learned to let go of the traditional five paragraph model in order to embrace more dynamic writing structures and explore topics more thoroughly. Throughout the seminar, I have gained a solid understanding of the expectations within college writing. In regards to my analytical skills, I learned how to read a passage or examine a film in order to address a prompt. I was informed about the mechanics of solid thesis statements and topic sentences, and about how these elements work together in order to create a solid argument.…
