Friday night, 4:59 p.m., I sat at my laptop, refreshing the page until the results were posted. At 5:00 p.m., I nervously scrolled until the page displayed ‘Freshman Class President’. Taking a deep breath, I squinted one eye and read what was underneath: Jackson Winn 2013-2014 Freshman President. I stared at the screen, tears fighting to emerge from behind my eyes, thinking it was the end of the world. Little did I know, this would be the first of my many battles in the election process. I quickly recovered from the loss and decided to contend for sophomore class president. Going with a different approach than my freshman campaign, I determined I could secure the votes through humor—plastering pictures of my face on Elsa and SpongeBob was sure to win the votes, right? Unfortunately, not. My ‘Bet on Betts’ was no match for Jackson’s ‘It’s a Win Win for Winn”. I was dejected as Jackson swept the ballots for the second time.

In leadership I witnessed the officers first-hand, and realized Jackson was a great leader. However, I felt our class was lacking passion and enthusiasm, so at the end of the year I ran for junior president. The junior campaign was different from the rest. I realized my main goal was to be the Associated Student Body (ASB) President my senior year. Still wanting to make a difference, I contended for president, not expecting much. At the end of the week, I checked the results. I had lost once again. Although I was slightly upset, I didn’t let the loss overpower the excitement I had for my extracurricular activities—drama and leadership. The end of my junior year had arrived, and plenty of my goals had changed. I was becoming increasingly involved with drama—making it into Play Production, a class where actors perform in the school plays, and being elected as Drama President.
