Personal Narrative: My French Class

Improved Essays
“You guys are starting French class this Saturday!” It wasn’t big surprise that I heard this phrase. My mother has always had a deep love for other languages and cultures. As a result of her interests, my family and I are always involved in her quest for knowledge. We are all interested in watching shows about other countries, cultures, and their history. Learning about cultures never seemed like a “bother”;but, my mom wanted us to explore other languages. She started introducing us to languages through flashcards, workbooks and dictionaries that came with the handiest tool known to man, translations to English. On the list of languages we were exhibited to were, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese. You will be surprised to see …show more content…
I just don’t think French class benefited me. The whole French culture wasn’t something that I could put myself into. From that whole experience, I drank too sweet juice made from French flowers, tried amazing French cookies and have a notebook full of words that I no longer understand. I’ve tried to learn other languages, but I can’t fully commit myself to practice and memorization. Learning Chinese at Lindblom has worked out better than any other language I’ve tried to learn. My family continues to learn about other cultures, but we mostly leave other languages alone. Now we have books fully accessible for whenever we feel the need to know something in French.Although my experience with a new language didn’t end successfully, I hope that I can try again some day. I may not want to re-learn French, but I think that learning other languages may benefit me in the future. One day, I will be able to speak in another (or multiple) languages and travel to the places I’ve learned about. I may not have committed myself to language when I was younger, but now I know that learning a language is something I definitely want to do. If you’re a person who wants to learn a new language, make sure you can fully dedicate yourself to it. Languages are a part of a culture in which you need time to study and progress as a

Many of us do not know what Arabians or Russians find rude because we do not know their culture, but learning a foreign language will allow a person to become open- minded about new things and will more than likely respect cultural differences. My father owns a construction business, and a few years ago, he met a couple in Cowan, Tennessee who needed some work done. In the couple’s living room, they had various compact discs that were Mexican music. Both families grew closer and closer week by week that we became a family. Both of my grandparents, as I now call them, quickly learned Spanish, and they learned a lot about our culture and respect our beliefs a lot more than they once did.…

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…

Being able to speak more than one language is one of the biggest advantages a person can have now a days. I recall the story my mom used to tell me, about when she first moved to Puerto Rico and how she did not know how to speak Spanish. She was born and raised in Philadelphia and moved to Puerto Rico when she was only fifteen years old. I remember her telling me how she only had one friend that she could communicate with in English. Imagine being fifteen in a new environment and not knowing their native language even though you are part of the same heritage.…

If one takes the time to understand and comprehend the culture and language from various people, one can comprehend that there is a larger world outside of one’s country, a world larger than could ever be imagined. Learning a new language could even be compared to having the ability to teleport, in the aspect that having a new language under one’s (figurative) belt facilitates the ability to travel.
