Mary Ainsworth’s Strange Situation procedure (SSP) is a critically renowned and mass utilized measure of attachment among infants. Four decades on, and it remains a key influence in determining the relationship between a child and their care-giver. However, despite being labelled a measurement of ‘gold standard’ (Merriam-Webster dictionary, as cited by Clarke-Stewart), we must consider the changes in society from the time of Ainsworth’s work. In this essay, I will be evaluating the SSP’s compatibility with other cultures and whether enough time is spent on each infant in order to come to a conclusion. Finally, I will critically evaluate its use in modern society, and it still has a place in modern life.…

Child of Rage The individual that a child grows up to become is affected by the role of a caregiver in his or her life. The video AS Psychology Attachment Part 1 talked about the sensitive period, just a few days after birth, in an infant’s life and how crucial it is for a child to attach and bond with their caregivers (2010). In order for a child to attach to another person and form those emotional ties and that shared bond his or her needs need to be met and the infant needs to feel a sense of love and compassion from the caregiver. Every relationship that the child creates or chooses not to create is going to be based upon the relationship that the child created or did not create with his or her caregivers.…

Prior to the simulation, I completed a questionnaire about my temperament, emotional wellbeing, as well as my educational strengths and weaknesses. Leo inherited my timid shyness, slow-to-warm up temperament, rapid mood swings, and poor mathematical skills. Consequently, I used an authoritative parenting style which promotes independence but under guidance. My goal was to help Leo achieve his individualistic goals and mitigate negative stresses implemented from genetics and the environment.…

Attachment The Attachment Theory maintains that the bond between an infant and his or her primary caregiver greatly influences personality, cognitive ability, and relationships throughout life. Psychologist Mary Ainsworth studied attachment patterns through an experiment known as the Strange Situation in which a mother left a child in a room for short period of time either alone or with a stranger; the child’s behavior was assessed when the mother left and when she returned. Three different patterns were observed. They are secure attachment, avoidant attachment, and ambivalent attachment.…

    (1) At 8 months, my baby, Melody, was a slow to warm up baby. Like Chess and Thomas’s description of the slow to warm up temperament, she was less physically active in comparison to others her age, could be temperamental, and showed low mood intensity (Santrock, 2015, p.172). Continuing to 12 months, Melody began to get easier. She seemed to have negative moods only when there was a specific reason for them and had increased her physical activity. Though she started off as difficult, she became easier, a characteristic of slow to warm up babies (V. Rajan, PS200 lecture, Fall 2016).…

Feral children, also known as wild children, are children who have grown up with little to no human contact. They are unaware of social human behaviour and language. This leads the children having delays in the development of their neural and psychological systems which support socio-emotional functioning. There are also ethical issues that arise when attempting to re-socialise a feral child. It is important for these children to be reintroduced into human life slowly and given sufficient care and attention to ensure they can adjust.…
