Personal Narrative: My First Week Of Middle School

Improved Essays
The first time I met Ally was in the lunchroom. Naive sixth graders don’t know where to sit; they just plop their bodies with the first people they see so that’s exactly what I did with her during the first week of middle school. Through the course of the three years in middle school, I’ve definitely had my ups and downs with her- numerous times we’ve fought and forgave, and although she left KIS last year, I still keep in touch with her over Skype and Snapchat. It’s been four years since my first impression of her, and of course, she has matured, but the image of her “jagalchi hair” bobbing up and down, looking wide-eyed is still, to this day, engraved in my brain as what defines Ally. What surprised me was that the young, innocent girl that …show more content…
Maybe it’s because ever since 3rd grade, I’ve been staying away from my family for a month, but I thought that the amount of freedom one receives at a boarding school is generally adequate for people in our age range. Ally thinks alike, and since there are certain times when you have to turn your phone in and do homework, the responsibility isn’t weighted as heavily. Receiving that opportunity to branch out from her parent’s restraints at a young age is considered a privilege to her, and she feels lucky to have one the chance. As teenagers, everyone matures at different speeds, some faster than others, while others blossom during their later years in puberty. That results in different times for adolescents to “come of age” to freedom, and while Ally believes she has come of age to independence, others may not. It surprised me to think that although millions of individuals are the same age as I am, every single one has a different competence.
All in all, I was able to identify the impact of culture on one’s identity and connect the amount of freedom to age and competence. Through this interview, I was also able to relate with her and it opened me up to the real world. The two things that I have learnt during my time with her I will definitely bear in mind for the rest of my

My first week of high school was pretty good. I like all of my teachers, and my classes are in a good order. It was difficult waking up early on the first day because prior to then, the earliest I had woken up during the summer was 8:00. I got lost going to FACS on the first day, and then again on the second day. I found my regular classes easily enough, and I haven’t gotten any tardies.…

This personal narrative is going to be about the first day of Middle School and my experiences as a 6th grader. It is going to go after my emotions and other descriptive details of the first day. I still remember how the seat belt felt tightening across my chest as the car got closer to the Middle School. During that time I knew nothing about being in a big school because the biggest school i've been in was yankee ridge. (Which is really small).…

The one thing that surprised me was that my interviewee is still able to do her ADL’s and IDL’s in her everyday life even though she walks with her walker. During the interview, I was emotional at one point, but other than that I was fine throughout it because the interview lasted for an hour to an hour and a half. One of the changes I have had of older adults was that they cannot do many things for themselves, but after interviewing this person she made me realize that you cannot stereotype based on age overall. For example, before I used to think that older adults lived alone and they always had someone doing most their ADL’s throughout their day. Now that I interviewed C.G. she really changed my perspective of older adults, and I am honestly glad to talk to an older adult about life in general.…

Successful Aging Interview The person I interviewed was Stasia Zedilko, a 79 year old woman living in Las Vegas. I met Stasia by chance, when she came into my work one day, shaking and struggling to walk, with concern of her health and safety related to encounters of elder abuse. I work at the Center for Social Justice on campus, and she stumbled upon the building I work in when trying to find directions to a resource that could help her. Stasia lives alone here in Vegas, with no support system aside from a distant relative in Connecticut, where she was born and raised before coming out to Vegas to pursue her business related career.…

As I went to my first day of school in a new city I was nervous, I didn't know if I was going to make any new friends, if I was going to fit in. The first day began and I immediately met Randy and Byanca, little did I know at the time that they would be my friends for all of my school career. Time went by and so did the grade levels, I would always struggle with one subject and thrive in another. During my elementary and middle school years I would struggle in language arts and history, but I would thrive in mathematics mainly because I love numbers.…

“Don’t forget, the paper is due next Wednesday!” My 8th period teacher, Mrs. Oakford told to my class and I as we streamed out of the cramped classroom on a Friday. We couldn’t wait to bust out of the schools doors and claim our prize of a short freedom for surviving another busy, exhausting, and slow week of middle school. I rushed to my locker, grabbed everything I would need for the homework due Monday, threw it in my bag and headed down the hall collecting my friends to walk to town to start what I would hope would be a slow but fun weekend off The weekend went quicker than I wished and before I knew it, it was late Sunday night and I still hadn’t done my homework, I realized this and got to work.…

It was a Thursday night, on my first week of kindergarten. I hadn’t made many friends because I was so use to playing with my sister, that I wasn’t sure if I knew how to make friends. I wasn’t shy when I was around my immediate family, but if you would put me in a room with people that I didn’t know. Well, I wouldn’t say a word. I would be so quiet that I would just sit there and you could forget that I was in the room.…

In the seventh grade, I faced a large transition in life. The previous year I had experienced middle school for the first time, but I would make that entrance again. I moved from Texas to North Dakota, where seventh grade was the first year of middle school. I took on those same fears and hopes that I had faced before, but in an unfamiliar place where I had no one except for family to give me support. I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

For this interview project we were assigned to interview a “successful ager” who is over 55 years old. When I first heard of the assignment I knew who I wanted to interview right from the start. The person who I chose to interview is my mother Carolyn McDonald. My mother was born in 1952 and is currently sixty four years old which puts her directly into this category. I thought that doing this assignment with my mother would not only be a unique experience that I would not have otherwise had, but also a larger insight into what has shaped and defined her over the years.…
