Maybe it’s because ever since 3rd grade, I’ve been staying away from my family for a month, but I thought that the amount of freedom one receives at a boarding school is generally adequate for people in our age range. Ally thinks alike, and since there are certain times when you have to turn your phone in and do homework, the responsibility isn’t weighted as heavily. Receiving that opportunity to branch out from her parent’s restraints at a young age is considered a privilege to her, and she feels lucky to have one the chance. As teenagers, everyone matures at different speeds, some faster than others, while others blossom during their later years in puberty. That results in different times for adolescents to “come of age” to freedom, and while Ally believes she has come of age to independence, others may not. It surprised me to think that although millions of individuals are the same age as I am, every single one has a different competence.
All in all, I was able to identify the impact of culture on one’s identity and connect the amount of freedom to age and competence. Through this interview, I was also able to relate with her and it opened me up to the real world.
