Personal Narrative: My First Wave

My First Wave Skimboarding can be an extremely competitive activity, and the professionals perform amazing tricks. But everyone starts in relatively the same way, by trial and error. And so it was with me. One bright summer day when I was around nine years old I was on the beach with my family. I had just gotten my first skimboard, which was a woody or wooden board with black Let’sParty traction pads, the day before and I was anxious to use it. Coincidentally, there was a one day camp where I could learn to skimboard taking place a short ways down the beach from where my family was sitting. I eagerly begged my parents to sign me up for this little camp, and they agreed to sign me up as long as I did not give up or lose interest in a week.
The camp started almost immediately after I was signed up. The camp consisted of six boys aged seven to twelve. The two instructors lead

The instructor just smiled and told us not to worry and that we would all get our chance to attempt to skim in just a moment. I should mention that the waves were about a foot and a half in height and were breaking fairly clean on the shore. The instructors had us all line up facing the waves and they began to call one person at a time to attempt to skim. Naturally, the older boys were called first. There were three boys in front of me. The first boy, who was almost thirteen, got prepared to run and drop his board into the water. A wave came and he failed to get on the board. The two others in front of me proceeded the same way as the first boy and they failed as well. Then it was my

Managing to break free from the first set of waves, I pushed forth into the next set of unceasing five foot waves. With legs bent upwards and arms plunging one after the other in a Michael Phelps mentality to finish the race with swift strokes, I kept my body centered in the middle of my seven foot board just like my grandpa positioned me to do so. With a split second to pause and raise my head to look over an oncoming wave, I made out the face of my grandpa, looking back at me from his own board and grinning at the look of my determined face to get out into the line-up. Eminent to the gray-haired “townies” who create their own spindrift from whipping the tail of their boards high in the air, is a homely beach, Rockpiles.…

I remember my uncle taking my cousins and I to Duns River Falls in Jamaica. At the bottom of the falls he took me from the shallow ends to the deep end, a good area where my head remained above the water if I stood on my tippy toes. My uncle laid his arms underneath me and taught me to relax and float. From time to time he would slowly remove his arms, allowing me to float without his support. I would freak out when I realized that his arms where no longer there holding me.…

Once passed the net, there was a very short ladder wall climb and it was now time for the last obstacle of the course, the “Accelerator” which is a massive water ramp slide down in to a few feet deep pool of water. I asked the volunteer if I could slide head first on my stomach and he said yes, so that is what I did both days. The funny part is the same kid was at this obstacle both days and he was shocked to see me back on Sunday and ready to go head first again. This was a very fun obstacle and I am sure it’s a challenge for anyone that has a fear of heights.…

When I first read, “Up in the Air, and Down, With a Twist” I was instantly brought back to the ten days that I spent in Springhill, Colorado where freestyle skiing was the norm. The lodge where I stayed was one of the lesser popular resort for skiing because my mother refused to let myself or my father ski in fear of injury. On the contrast, I felt immersed in the winter culture, and this article brings back those fond memories of my vacation. The author, Henry Fountain is able to catch the reader’s attention by illustratively breaking down the incredibly difficult sport of freestyle skiing into simple constructs that everyone can understand. I am a firm believer in the colloquialism seeing is not believing, but knowing is understanding.…
