Personal Narrative: My First Violin

Part of me knew that I was being irrational, that I was silly, but another, louder and more childish part of me, insisted that I keep them. They were not anything special, just thin strips of blue electrical tape and truth be told I never used them anyway. These thin strips of tape were used by beginner students to learn where to put their fingers on the string to play the notes. Even though everyone else, even those less practiced than I, had abandoned the blue tape that I still clung to them for months. Those thin strips of tape had been with me since my first violin in 5th grade, when my fingers were not even big enough to play on a full sized violin. That was when I actually was a beginner just learning how to play the notes. Every time I got a new violin, I insisted that my teacher add the tape. The first time I replaced my violin I was still considered a beginner and it was assumed that I would need the tape, so my teacher put it on automatically. …show more content…
By 7th grade, I was in the advanced orchestra; I was no longer a beginner. It was assumed that I would not want, let alone need, tape for my violin. In fact, it was unusual that I hadn't yet taken it off of my old violin by this point. At that point I thought that I would never take that tape off, wherever my violin career went. In my imagination, I could be in a elegant gown, playing the most difficult of pieces in a grand opera house, with a large Symphony Orchestra and still have those thin pieces of blue electrical tape on my violin. I finally overcame my irrational attachment after somewhat smaller scale performance: the last concert during my 7th grade year. I had the tape on my violin throughout the many practices, through the dress rehearsal performance and through the concert
