Personal Narrative: My First Vietnam War

It was during the winter of 1950 when it all happened. I ignored the teacher’s lecture to look out through the frosty windowpanes and admire our South Korean flag waving outside in the freezing weather. Unexpectedly, I heard a bang from the classroom door. Soldiers with North Korean badges came in with guns, threatening our lives. At the time, the only person I could think of was my sister. Our grandmother raised us because our parents passed away. I was afraid that my sister would grow up alone, because our grandmother did not have much time left to live. I was only praying for her safety, if she was doing alright at home. I was too shocked to process what was going on because only seconds ago I was sitting in class peacefully. They tied us with a blindfold and drove. Feeling petrified, thunderstorms of shootings surrounded me. After a short time, I heard the soldiers getting off the …show more content…
When they took us outside in the chilly weather to work again, I took my chance to kill the soldier next to me. As my plan was a success, I ran off to the other direction. As I was running, I heard seven other people running behind me. I turned around and realized that they were my classmates. I did not know where I was going, but I kept on running. On the first day of my successful escape, things were going smooth but then suddenly half us were gone. Either they died or lost us. I did not have choice but to keep on going. The only people left were me and two other girls. Feeling a gush of frosty wind, feeling spikes on my feet, I kept on going. The only reason why I was risking my life was to be with my sister. Walking through the frosty winds, the other girls started to show some symptoms of hypothermia. They could not think straight and hindered me from going which was clearly at the wrong time. I told them to push through, but seconds later, they collapsed so I had to leave them

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

It was a rainy morning in Seattle, and I wore my Army dress uniform. Stepping off the bus, I ran 100 yards to the entrance of the Airport. After I purchased my ticket and checked my bags, I headed to the bar. It was the time of the winter equinox, and I was headed home with my discharge in my duffle bag. I suppose I should have worn my civilian clothes, but I had been stateside six months, and the comradeship I experienced in Vietnam had yet to loosen its grip on me.…

Bullets whizzed past my head as I ran away from the action towards a nearby spring to fill my now empty pitcher. I had to make countless trips back and forth from the battlefield to this little safe haven. I crouched near the water's edge and filled up the pitcher. I peeked through the reeds and watched as men fired cannons. I took a deep breath and stood up.…

When I woke up, I still had that guilty feeling in my stomach. Oh well, how could I fix what I did anyways? While I was thinking about my problem, Cush came by and told me it was time to get my mules ready, so we could deliver supplies to the Yankees. Later on, we got ordered to form into a wagon train and we soon started our journey. After traveling for some time, we arrived at a warehouse, where we had to pick up our supplies.…

It was cold and ordinary evening on March 5, 1770, when I was walking down King street with my friend Henry. As were walking past the Custom House a young wig maker's apprentice walked up to a British soldier and insulted him because he had not payed for a wig. Another British soldier had walked out and scolded the young boy for disrespecting a British soldier. The boy exchanged insults with the soldier so he pulled out his musket and struck the boy on the side of the head. A stream of chills rushed through my body when I witnessed that.…

It was a rainy Saturday night. I left my dorm, my stomach empty because I’d been trying to wait out the rain before going to find something to eat. But the rain didn’t end, and although it was quite late, I decided to make a quick trip to the store nearby rather than wait any longer. My umbrella was broken, so I put on my hoodie and tried to run as fast as possible. About halfway to the store, I saw an old woman with a folding walker, trying to get past the intersection while holding her umbrella.…

My foot fell asleep as I was crammed inside the dark closet hiding from them. I could hear the faint gunshots in the distance, yet, as time passed by, the gunshots became louder and louder. The gun smoke which leaked in through the walls, made me nauseous as it filled my lungs like a gas chamber. Though I dared not to cough, in fear that someone would find me. Nauseous and confused, I listened to them as they were all yelling something in German.…

The sun is beating down on you, sand and dirt are stinging your skin and eyes, and you are running on little or no sleep. Large brown with gold lettering. Given to me by my grandmother, this book unconsciously started me down the path of my fascination of geography. One of the first pages in the book was a fold out that had illustrations of all the world 's flags of the time. I started by finding out about the countries countries that I thought had the coolest flags, eventually I made it a goal to memorize all of the flags in the book. I stepped off the plane and was hit by southern Vietnam’s hot, humid air. A relative I had just met handed me a water bottle and I drank from it as I scanned my surroundings. Hundreds of motorcycles zipped around the streets, some riding up onto sidewalks blanketed with dust. People lined the streets, stray dogs loped in narrow alleyways, and old men sat on plastic stools, smoking cigarettes and scratching their patchy beards. Looking up, I saw power lines clumped in a jumbled mess.…

The purpose of the interview was to learn about Vietnam, the country where my informant was born and lived until 1975 when Saigon was invaded by the North Vietnamese. In addition, I had desired to see Vietnam from a perspective other than the Vietnam War where Americans fought. However, there is another reason I chose Vietnam, I work with students whose parents are from Vietnam even though the parents are a younger generation their culture is alive and lived out in their community. Some of the students return to Vietnam every year for the Chinese New Year celebrations.…

Preface When I had to decide whose story to I should write my biographical narrative, the only person that came to my mind at first was my grandmother, Connie Kim. Though I was planning to write her memories of the Korean War, I realized that there would be many stories that would be similar to each other. However, my grandmother has her own unique story: her story of working as a secretary in the Korean government during the 1960s, during Park Chung-hee’s regime. Whenever I meet my grandparents once or twice a year, I am surprised by my old grandmother’s good memory and organization skills, along with her ability to stay healthy. Both of these skills were vital to her job; it seems that she did not lose these skills even after changing jobs.…
