Personal Narrative: My First Time I Get Behind The Wheel

Decent Essays
The first time I got behind the wheel was with my dad and his 1996 ford explorer.
I did not know how to drive but got the basics down. We went on back roads and just driven around for a while. Then when I got my permit i got a 2000 subaru outback and I loved it, but sadly subaru engines and water gasket suck and cracked the engine. (never buy a subaru unless it has been engine swap) I got another car and it was a 1997 ford explorer. Thing was amazing through my first winter that I ever went thouth no problem and the thing never broke down. Then I had the drivetrain go out and mess up my 4 wheel drive so I was down graded to a Ford econoline. That thing was a box on wheels and never gave up. It was super comfy like driving your couch around.

“Tuck and roll” that’s what they say when jumping off or out of a moving vehicle but that didn’t work for me. I was about five years old, I was visiting my grandparents that I hadn’t seen in a while. I was riding with my dad on a four wheeler and I was having fun until I felt the four wheeler jump, and then I turned around to see my dad jumping off. That was when I got scared. I tried to drive it, but with my family, chasing and yelling for me to jump off it was hard to do.…

I drove my first BMW when I was 20 years old; my boss at the time let me drive his E39 530i home. It was the most amazing thing I had ever drove and decided right then I must have a BMW once I made enough money to afford one. It was fast (to me), handled like it was on rails, quiet, comfortable, and everything a person who loves to drive could really ask for at the time; truly a “the ultimate driving…

I've always heard that drivers should practice "defensive driving. " It makes sense, we all know how big a car is and how fast it can go, you can find all of those numbers somewhere on the car itself. We all know someone who has been in an accident, be it minor or major. When cars collide, it can be catastrophic and everyone knows it well. But somehow, at least for me, the idea of it actually all being real didn't happen until I had gotten into an accident where I was forced to deal with the consequences of even a minor collision.…

This was what took place on the day I bought my first car. It was a green Ford Focus hatchback, and I loved it every bit of it, even its unnatural green shell. That being said, I despised the fact initially of driving a manual. The learning process was a race against time however, with each stall I was sure my car was losing the little life it still had left in the 12 year old body.…

After five hours under Mrs. Gonzalez’s 1997 Plymouth, my hands were so dirty I had to wash them ten times just to see my fingernails again. She was a familiar face around the shop, given that neighborhood thieves had routinely targeted her car. This time, though, they had gone too far. Someone had crawled underneath the car and cut out the valuable catalytic converter, and she couldn’t afford a replacement. When I looked at her and said, “That’ll be $563,” her face turned pale.…

Driving is the best feeling ever. We all do it, or one day we will, most likely in our teen years, but not me. You see, my first swerve was in my early, early ages, back when Dora was your main explorer. I owned the hottest ride on the block, my Barbie Jeep. The Barbie Jeep was a present from my mom on my birthday.…

“Mom, I can’t do it,” I repeated, exasperated, for the second time since we started driving together the previous week. It was the summer I turned 17 and I was finally conquering my Achilles’ heel — learning to drive. The car moved slightly too much to the left. I hit the brakes and the car jerked, something that gave both my mother and me headaches.…

The summer of 2013 I was 15 and my dad was teaching me how to drive the loader tractor because my grandfather was injured and he was the one who typically drove the loader tractor. It was haying season which was a busy time of the year and my dad was in need of help and I was the only one who had my tractors license on the farm because my brother and sister were too young. My dad first showed me the basics, where the break, clutch, and shifter were. Then he stared to teach me how to shift.…

My first car was something that I greatly was looking forward to getting as a child and my interest in getting one grew, as the days got closer to my sixteenth birthday. The first car I owned was a Automatic Black 2004 Ford f-150 truck, which I discovered on a website called Craigslist. It was priced at five thousand nine hundred dollars with only eighty-four thousand miles on it, which in my case was great considering that I could only afford a seven thousand dollar car. The truck came with all manual locks and windows and also had a small amount of hail damage that could really only be seen at a certain angle. But even with reasonable price on the truck I still attempted to negotiate for an even lower price to further my luck.…

Being part of the generation who grew up watching Fast and the Furious films has always made me want to drive a car. At that time I knew I still had a while before I could drive, but any chance I got to be in the driver seat I would. My first time I ever got behind the wheel was right after I watch the fast and the furious in 2001. It was during the summer, my mom was washing her car and according to her “I accidently locked myself inside and somehow I managed to turn the car on and started backing up the car.” My mom was so scared she started yelling “put the car on park” “put the car on park” but I had no clue what she meant.…

We ended up taking my friend Nicks old Buick La Saber, it was on old beat up four door car but, we decided that it was probably the best choice since my car was a two door car and it was way too small for four people on that long of a road trip. We quickly learned that taking the Buick was a huge mistake. As we were driving the car would get close to overheating and we had to stop several times to let the engine cool down. Also as we were driving the power steering would slowly lessen. This was because there was a leak in his power steering lines.…
